Margaret Grimes

Margaret Grimes is Distinguished Professor Emerita of WCSU and the founder of the MFA in Visual Arts program, which she directed as Coordinator from 2000 to 2012. She received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania where she studied with Neil Welliver, Paul Georges, and Rudy Burkhardt. Her paintings have been exhibited in many museums including National Academy of Design, Philbrook Museum, Queens Museum, Ringling Museum, Wilmington Center for Contemporary Art, National Academy of Sciences, and the Newport Museum.

With a long history of gallery exhibitions in NYC and eighteen solo shows, Grimes has exhibited with Denise Bibro Gallery, Fischbach Gallery, Katherina Rich Perlow Gallery, and Blue Mountain Gallery. Her recent exhibition at Blue Mountain in 2017, entitled “The Secret Life of Trees”, was a group of paintings and large-scale drawings done on-site in the woods of Maine and Connecticut, each portraying her fascination with the effects of darkness. Her work has been included in several books on American landscape painting and reviewed in many publications, including Art in America, The Boston Globe, Art New England, and Hyperallergic. She is a member of the National Academy of Design where she was awarded the Benjamin Altman Prize in 2004.
