Following graduation she traveled to Mexico City where she held her first one woman show of paintings and drawings. which was held in November of 1960 at the Galleria Carmel. 

She then went on to obtain a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin.

Professor Appel has been teaching printmaking courses, as well as courses in design art history and painting at Western since 1966.  She has exhibited widely in New York City, Connecticut and Wisconsin.
