Pat Barkman was invited to demonstrate her watercolor work during the 2008 Color in January show, the annual art show put on by SCAN. Here Pat is introduces.  She will paint a scene from her trip to the Adirondacks.
Pat begins with adding a hat, and explaining her palette
and that she always uses 7 brushes, starting with
the biggest working down as she adds more detail..

Pat paint the sky and then adds the mountains and trees.  She works for an hour, explaining that when she works in her studio the work does not go this quickly.

At her studio, she works horizontally and tilts the board
to get the washes to move around.

Pat works with four blues, a sienna and a green.

While painting, Pat says to her audience, "I know
when I'm at a demonstration, I think 'why are you
doing that?', if you see something you think I should
not be doing during this demo, just yell 'NO'"

When asked how long she works while painting in the
mountains, Pat answered, "until I get cold."

This scene is from the McIntyre Range and Indian Pass
of the Adirondacks, the high peak area in Lake Placid.

Pat pints out the detail needed where the
sky meets the mountains. She added that if the painting
surface is smaller the brushes are smaller
and the details are done with teeny, tiny brushes.

The final touches.

Adding a frame, Pat shows the finished piece.

Pat has this piece showing in Color in January as well as a few others.
