demonstrates Batik Painting
Wednesday, June 26, 2002
Newtown Meeting House
Newtown, CT

Phyllis Boger shows examples of work she has completed or in the process of completing.
She explains that the process can be time-consuming and can be a two, three or four step procedure depending on the desired results.
Using a mirrored art table, Phyllis demonstrates  the addition on paint to the wax design.  The wax design was drawn free-hand with a tjanting. 50% paraffin and 50% beeswax were melted.  The wax must go through the fabric to prevent the paint from leaking.
Use acrylic inks or batik dyes.  All materials can be purchased from Dick Blick or the inks and dyes can be purchased at the craft stores.
Phyllis adds more wax design to the picture.  Any where there is wax the color of the materials will stay the same upon removal of the wax.
The wax is melted off with an iron.  Additional layers of paint or wax are best added before ironing The final product should be washed and put in the dryer to set.  The colors will show through both sides of the fabric.
