Word and Image: Collaboration
June 21 - July 9, 2005
Opening reception: Thursday, June 23rd, 5-8 p.m.
The inspiration or impulse to create art may come from a number of
places, a beautiful scene, a song or a line of poetry. The artists of
the Blue Mountain Gallery decided to work on a group project that would
embody the spirit of collaboration between the written word and the
visual image.
Over thirty artists will participate in this group show that runs June
21 through July 9, 2005. Each artist will interpret the theme of
collaboration between word and image in accordance with their
discipline. Blue Mountain prides itself on a wide diversity of artists
and a high quality of artistic excellence which should be evident in the
exhibition.
For this exhibition the artists have stretched the idea of collaboration
to include more than the traditional method of working side by side on
text and image. The words have come from friends and the famous,
contemporary and historic. Some of the paintings, prints and sculptures
include text within the artwork. Others have the related text posted
near by.
There are two readings scheduled by poets and writers connected with
artworks in the exhibition:
Saturdays, June 25 and July 9 at 2 p.m.
Small Works Invitational 2005
Part I: Paintings, July 12-30
Reception July 14th 5-8 p.m.
Part II: Works on Paper, August 2-20, 2005
Reception: August 4th 5-8 p.m.
Blue Mountain Gallery presents a two-part exhibition of small works by
established and emerging artists in Small Works Invitational 2005.
For Part I: Paintings, July 12-30, the works vary in imagery from
the abstract to the political and in style from tightly painted to
energetically expressive. The small scale of the paintings,
approximately 12 x 12 inches, intensifies the visual experiences. Some
are packed with details that become more powerful in the small format
and others use the scale to focus on a few strong elements.
In Part II: Works on Paper, August 2-20, the invited artists have
created a wide range of works that are drawings, prints, collages, and
paintings. As shown in this exhibition, when working on paper artists
are more apt to use the energy of the untouched surface as one element
of the artwork, which adds to the immediacy of the small scale.
MFA graduates included in the Small Works Invitational are:
Lee Cordon MFA '04
Laurie Girouard MFA '04
