SPA 161 Introductory Spanish I--Reading 3 SH
A first-semester beginning course in listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish.  Three free elective credits.  This course is standard graded and offers the remedial/repeat grade.  General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language (if SPA 163 or SPA 164 is successfully completed).

SPA 162 Introductory Spanish I--Speaking 3 SH

SPA 163 Introductory Spanish II--Reading 3 SH

SPA 164 Introductory Spanish II--Speaking 3 SH
A one-semester advanced beginning course in spoken Spanish.  This course is graded and offers the remedial/repeat grade.  General Education: Humanities/ Foreign Language.

SPA 170 Practical Spanish for Health Professionals 3 SH
Introduces health personnel to the basics in structure and grammar and familiarizes the student with the vocabulary and terminology necessary for communication with Spanish-speaking people. Spring semester. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.

SPA 196 Intermediate Spanish Language and Culture I 3 SH
The first semester intermediate level course of Spanish that focuses on reading, writing, oral comprehension, and speaking through a study of Hispanic cultures.  General Education: Humanities/ Foreign Language.

SPA 197 Intermediate Spanish Language and Culture II 3 SH
The second semester intermediate level course of Spanish that focuses on reading, writing, oral comprehension, and speaking through a study of Hispanic cultures.  General Education: Humanities/ Foreign Language.

SPA 201 El mundo iberoamericano 3 SH
A study of the principal aspects of Hispanic culture from colonial times to the present. Special emphasis is given to Brazil, Cuba, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Prerequisite: SPA 197 or equivalent. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.

SPA 203 Conversación 3 SH
A conversation course for the non-native speaker with intensive practice in those areas that are particularly difficult for native English-speaking students. Prerequisite: SPA 197 or equivalent. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.

SPA 205 Traducción inversa 3 SH
Study and application of methods for translating English into idiomatic Spanish. Daily exercises emphasize those lexical and syntactical areas of greatest dissimilarity between the two linguistic codes. Prerequisite: SPA 197 or equivalent. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.

SPA 207 Comentario de texto 3 SH
An introduction to the written analysis of Spanish literary texts. Prerequisite: SPA 205. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.

SPA 221 La civilización española 3 SH
A survey of the geopolitical, socioeconomic and cultural aspects of peninsular Spain from the time of the First Republic to the present day. Prerequisite: SPA 203 or 207.

SPA 230 El cuento 3 SH
The reading of selected short stories; grammatical and textual understanding via the “conocimiento del texto” oral and written reports. Prerequisite: SPA 203 or 207. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.

SPA 231 El teatro español 3 SH
The study and appreciation of the major theatrical contributions of Spain. Prerequisite: SPA 203 or 207. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.

SPA 330, 331 Autores representativos I & II 6 SH
Introduction to Spanish literature from the earliest works through the 20th century. Reading of representative works supplemented by lectures and discussions. Prerequisite: SPA 221. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.

SPA 335 Romanticismo 3 SH
A study of the literature of Spain during the 19th century through the writings of el duque de Rivas, Martinez de la Rosa, Mariano Jose de Larra, Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, Jose de Espronceda, Jose Zorilla and other minor figures. Prerequisite: SPA 330 and 331. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.

SPA 337 La novela española contemporánea 3 SH
A study through representative works of the modern novel from its realist beginnings in the last quarter of 19th century through naturalism modernism, postmodernism, vanguardism and tremendism to the new generation. Prerequisite: SPA 330, 331. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.

SPA 340 Spanish-American Civilization 3 SH
Designed to acquaint the student with the rich cultural heritage of Latin America. Prerequisite: SPA 201 or equivalent. General Education: Humanities/ Foreign Language.

SPA 341 Spanish-American Literature 3 SH
The development of literature from colonial through modern times, stressing significant writers and trends. Prerequisite: SPA 221. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.

SPA 400 Linguistics 3 SH
Survey of linguistic theory and method. Application of linguistic principles to learning and teaching of foreign languages. Basic principles of the phoneme, morpheme and constituent analysis. Survey of grammatical theory, with special emphasis on contrastive grammar in the target language of the student. Prerequisite: senior or graduate standing. General Education: Humanities/Foreign Language.
