Services
New Faculty Orientation
At the beginning of each academic year new faculty are provided with an orientation to the university. Key university staff meet with new faculty to introduce them to a variety of important programs, offices, and services. Depending on the number of new faculty, the orientation is accomplished either in groups or individually.
Mentor Program
The Director sends an invitation to the new faculty for this. If one wants to participate, he or she is put in touch with a faculty member from another department to whom they ask questions, talk, whatever. The Director’s job is to solicit volunteers from the faculty to be mentors.
Observation Deck
Interested in how your colleagues handle lecture styles, presentations, discussions, homework, group work, activities?
We can learn so much from each other!
The Observation Deck Program allows us to observe each others' classes for ideas and techniques to incorporate into our individual teaching styles.
There are two ways to participate.
- Be an observer. Contact us and we can arrange for you to visit other classrooms to gain insight into teaching. There is no obligation. Visit as many or few classes as you like. There is no report to write.
- Be observed. Let observers visit your classes. You select which classes allow visitors. Contact us if you are interested in helping out other faculty. Don’t worry, there is no evaluating. These observations are for the benefit of the observer, not the observed.
Individual Consultation
In addition to the above, CELT offers individual consultation to faculty seeking to improve some aspect of your teaching. We can help by 1) holding informal conversations 2) helping to find relevant materials related to teaching and learning, 3) observing your teaching, and/or 4) looking over syllabi, instructional materials, and the like. Please contact us if you are interested.
