When it was time to consider colleges, Merritt Schneider considered the University of Connecticut, the University of Vermont and Iona College. "I was accepted everywhere I applied and chose to come to Western because it was most affordable," he says. "Shortly after I decided to attend WCSU, I was accepted into the Honors Program. My experience with the program and at the university has been so great that I wish I had not wasted the money to apply anywhere else."

Schneider decided to major in accounting because he has always been interested in math and business. "Accounting and finance are where those two fields meet. Since accounting made more sense to me, it was an obvious choice."

As a student in the WCSU Honors Program, Schneider got to know the program's director, Professor of Political Science Dr. Christopher Kukk. "Dr. Kukk has been a very important person in my life ever since I was accepted into the Honors Program," Schneider says. "I spent many hours in his office and he acted as a mentor to me. He helped me rediscover my inquisitiveness and reminded me of the importance of asking questions."

Asked what he will remember most about his Western experience, Schneider says, "My fondest memories are of the three years I lived on campus. While living on campus, I met many of my closest friends, including a German exchange student with whom I regularly speak."

After graduation, Schneider plans to take the CPA exam. "In October, I will begin working with EY. I hope to have a successful career in business and plan to give back to the school in any way that I can."
Schneider's advice to new students entering WCSU is: "A quality college education is not determined by where you go, but the amount of effort you put in. I think that I had such a positive experience at WestConn because I put a lot into it. If you put the effort into educating yourself, you will reap the rewards."
