WCSU Degree:  Ed.D.

Activities: Full-time teacher of mathematics at Bethel High School

Honors and Awards: High GPA

Reine Issa earned a Master of Science in Industrial and Operations Engineering at University of Michigan in 1988 and a Master of Business Administration in Operations Management at Indiana University in 1985. Now a full-time math teacher at Bethel High School, Issa will receive her Ed.D. in Instructional Leadership at WCSU. "I am a life-long learner and strive to continuously improve my instruction and to make a difference in my students' lives, learning and achievement," she says.

"My love for teaching mathematics and making a difference in the young people's lives is not new," Issa says. "I have been teaching mathematics for at least 22 years in different disciplines and fields. Mathematics is needed every day regardless of an individual's interest and career. Many high school students do not see the power of mathematics and do not realize its importance until their senior year when they apply to colleges. With a motive to make a difference, I chose to teach high school students patience, structure, reasoning, critical thinking and appreciation for mathematics."

Issa decided to pursue her doctoral degree at Western because "I have had a long relationship with WCSU's faculty as an adjunct for almost 11 years, and as a student seeking a teaching certificate in mathematics. In addition, WCSU has an excellent reputation for the program."

During the course of Issa's doctoral program, Professor of Education and Educational Psychology Dr. Marcia Delcourt was her dissertation primary adviser and mentor. "Her unlimited support exceeded my expectations and furthered my development as a researcher and an educator."

Asked what she will remember most about her Western experience, Issa says, "Defending my research."

After graduation, Issa says she "would like to make a difference in other teachers' lives."

Issa’s advice to new students entering WCSU is: “Build relationships with the professors, and learn about the available resources and opportunities that WCSU offers.”
