Before becoming a student at WCSU, Matt Monaco attended Auburn University and North Carolina State University. "I had a full ride for math and science academics going into my freshman year at Auburn," Monaco says.

The North Carolina resident moved to the Danbury area because he obtained a job at a psychiatric hospital to acquire clinical hours for physician assistant school applications. His cousin, who lives locally, had graduated from Western and "had nothing but great things to say about the professors and the atmosphere."

Monaco knew early on that health care was what he wanted to pursue. He explains, "I have always been fascinated with the field of medicine and have known that is what I want to do. Biology seemed like a very practical major to reach that goal."

While at Western, Monaco says many members of the faculty and staff have taken him under their wing. "The entire Biology and Chemistry faculty have really become mentors to me. Their dedication to their profession makes the classes that much more enjoyable."

Asked what he will remember most about his WCSU experience, Monaco says, "Meeting such good friends and professors during my time here.

After graduation, Monaco says he will attend Physician Assistant school at East Carolina University.

Monaco’s advice to new students entering WCSU is: "College is nothing like high school. You have to put the work in outside of class in order to succeed. I learned that the hard way as a freshman."
