Information Technology Committee (ITC) Minutes

Present: Lorraine Capobianco (chair), Dan Goble, Rona Gurkewitz, Kit Hinga, Veronica Kenausis, Todd McInerney, Rich Montague, Mitch Wagener, and Rebecca Woodward.

  • Budget:
    • FY11 is manageable, FY12 will be very tough.
    • WCSU presented a $117M budget to the board; it was well received.
    • 17 % set aside for Financial Aid
    • The VPA building is in the design and development phase. Construction scheduled for FY12, $64M of $94M.
  • The university is interviewing finalists for the VP of Finance position..
  • Linda Vaden-Goad is leaving Western for a position at Framingham State University. Carol Hawkes has announced that she will be retiring.
  • George Kahkedjian was able to continue to fund the Apple maintenance contract for another year.

Projects – Update

Summer Projects

  • Jason Esposito has determined the following as the minimum hardware specifications that will reasonably run Windows 7: dual-core processor, two GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive, and a recent video card (ATI or NVIDIA). Machines purchased in the last three to four years should be within this range. Presently, there are 832 computers in use that fall below these specifications; some are instructor computers which will be replaced during the summer.
  • New desktop computers have arrived. Some individuals in the administrative departments have gone over five years with the same computer and they will be replaced this summer.
  • Jason and Lorraine have chosen a laptop model and will place an order soon. Additionally, Stephen Veillette has chosen a Macintosh model. The laptops and Macintoshes will be purchased with CSUS 2020 money. Lorraine has learned that 2020 money cannot be used for items that were previously purchased with CHEFA money. Lorraine will investigate how much, if any,  of those funds are available.
  • For now, replacement computers for individuals will be running XP. Sometime during the fall/10, UC will start to deliver Windows 7 computers to individuals. This will initially be for people who are receiving a new computer or a replacement computer (that meets the minimum specifications).
  • The replacement plan for the summer is as follows (assuming sufficient funds and resources):
    • All classroom instructor computers (both PC and Mac) will be replaced with new hardware running Windows 7 or OS X. Multi-station classroom instructor stations will continue to run Windows XP until all the software in those rooms is evaluated with Windows 7.
    • Public machines in the Haas library on floors 2-5.
    • The PC side of the Biology lab.
    • The machine in the sound booth.
    • WH306 will be re-imaged.
    • New b/w laser printers will be ordered and installed in the four computer centers and the two libraries.
    • Network upgrades for EOL equipment.
    • Servers will continue to be virtualized.
    • If funds are available, the student machines in WS 117a, WS 212, and WS377b. These rooms were last updated in 2006.
    • If UC has time, Pharos print software will be deployed in the four computer centers.
  • Additionally, we will begin to physically lock machines to tables/desks. We will start with the classrooms without access control. Lorraine believes that is about 60 classrooms.
  • The construction on the MIS security lab is expected to be completed over the summer.

Rich Montague requested that the MIS faculty be upgrade to Windows 7 to match the new instructor stations.

Media Services Initiatives – Deferred to the September or October  meeting.
