General Education at WCSU
The Curriculum and Requirements
The general education requirements at Western Connecticut State University are designed to expose students to the broad spectrum of human knowledge in the areas of writing and communication skills, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, natural and computational sciences, and health promotion and exercise sciences. Students matriculated for all degrees are required to complete courses in these five broad areas.
University Senate Committee on General Education
The Committee on General Education was established in March 2005 to "...ensure that the general education curriculum is consistent with the mission of Western Connecticut State University, the State of Connecticut’s general education requirements, and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accreditation standards."
The First Year Experience program is being implemented in fall 2007 in the general education curriculum. Students take three 100-level general education courses throughout the curriculum specifically designated as First Year Experience (“FY”) courses. These courses enroll first year students only and are capped at 22 students per section (most other 100-level general education courses have much higher enrollment). The courses are designed to engage students in the intellectual life of the university, develop effective study skills, and help students explore, discover, and connect with the resources needed to succeed at WestConn.
