Updates

  • ITC Meeting Times - To have as many members attend meetings as possible during the Spring 2009 semester, meeting start times will alternate between 11am and 11:30am.  Meetings as follows:  March 12, 11:30am-1pm; April 9th 11-12:30pm; May 14th 11:30-1pm.
  • Completed intersession projects.  WH219 Music Classroom/Lab received new Macs. BR017 Video Editing Classroom/Lab received upgrades to existing computers.  When the Academic Student Success Center is completed, target date fall 2010, the STTC will be expanded and moved there.  The space the STTC now occupies can become an area for specialized computer setups for music, video editing, GIS in addition to more computers available at Midtown.  Currently there isn’t enough space in the STTC for specialized technology and not enough computers for student use.  Speakers installed in Mac Classrooms (WH306, WH306, WH219).  WH325B Social Science/GIS Classroom/Lab received 20” monitors.  WA318 received clickers and software.
  • Lorraine noted that there is an increasing number of new IT projects being added to the already large number of  IT projects. We are getting farther behind due to limited staffing, time, etc.  Along with the increasing number of students, the demand for computer services in the labs continues to rise.  That is great news that technology is being used but that also means increased support issues with less staff.  The number of computers used for research and general purpose in Haas Library was discussed.  Using laptops was raised as a possible solution to increasing the number of computers for students but was deemed not feasible at this time because of lack of resources to provide support. Veronica asked if there was any way to strategically look to solve the problem of multiple IDs, passwords, PINs?  Lorraine said yes and it will happen over time as projects are completed but the problem is staffing.  Lorraine noted that she met with Karen Stopford, the new Security Officer at the system office.  Lorraine is not sure yet of how Karen might help us at WCSU besides a IT Disaster Recovery Plan and system-wide policies but the amount of security and auditing will increase.

Projects – Spring/Summer 2009

  • Haas/Young Library, MIS Security Classroom/Lab, STTC – new monitors, WSCC large monitor in the back, evaluate RAM in various machines in ITC Replacement Plan, upgrade “Other” category machines as time permits, Exchange 2007/Outlook/Smartphone conversion.  Lorraine thought that the plan for the MIS Security Classroom/Lab was all set and the completion date July 2009.  Rich Montague did not think so.  Lorraine said that the Vice Presidents will have to decide the priority of projects because there are just too many.  The vendor who did the projection for WS127 met with Jason Esposito to discuss doing the same in WS243.  Lorraine asked the ITC to let her know if they become aware of areas that should be prioritized.  As of today, all full time and adjunct faculty have been migrated to Outlook and 65% of administrators have been migrated.  It is the goal to have the balance of the administrators migrated by mid-March.  Joint calendars are available in Outlook but joint calendars with auto features available after SharePoint is deployed.  We are moving towards unified messaging and are currently looking at Outlook and phone system products.  Dan Goble mentioned that with Entourage there is no return receipt.  UC will investigate.  Under the MS Office Premier Support agreement, Microsoft will complete a risk and optimization analysis of our Exchange environment.  This list does not include the Summer 2009 ITC Replacement Plan projects that list will be evaluated at the upcoming ITC meetings.

Student Questions/Needs – Update

  • Microsoft Software – MS Vista Business with Service pack 1, Office 2007 Enterprise for PC, Office 2008 for Mac is available to students, free of charge.  MS Office 2007 Enterprise contains Access, Exel, Groove InfoPath, One Note, Outlook PowerPoint, Publisher, Visio Viewer, Word, Office Shared features, and Office Tools.  MS Office 2008 for the Mac contains Entourage, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.  The software is available for pick up at the MTCC and WSCC.
  • SGA members email quota was increased from 35MB to 100MB as of today.
  • SGA President email account created in Outlook.
  • Link to SGA calendar from various points on the website is complete.
  • XML feed of university events for SGA calendar is complete.
  • Suggestions on the SGA website – done and will continue with feedback
  • SGA elections online – web application is being written by UC. 

The SGA thanked Lorraine the UC staff for their assistance with these projects.  Lorraine met with the computer center lab assistants and supervisors and learned that they were very concerned about their job security.  Lorraine reassured them.  Lorraine would like to hire students to work at the UC help desk for the afternoons and other areas in UC and asked the ITC members for referrals. 

Start of the Semester – Issues/Comments
Rona Gurkewitz thanked Jason Esposito for his assistance with Textpad.  Dan Goble also thanked Jeff Postolowski for the excellent job done in WH219. 

Faculty & Classroom Software

  • A draft version of WCSU Software Inventory was distributed to the ITC.  Lorraine asked the ITC to review the information and let her know if there is software that should be listed and is not and to check the location information.  Lorraine will send the ITC the inventory with comments/directions before sending out to all faculty. State guidelines require us to remove unauthorized software even if it is free.
  • Lorraine asked the ITC if anyone in their area was waiting for or needs software.  If so, send the request in an email to Request University Computing and to include in the subject “ITC Software Request”.

Inventory – Faculty & Staff that have more than one machine

  • Auditors are asking why do some faculty and staff have more than one machine.  Some faculty have a high powered desktop for research; shared laptop for their department; and a laptop that provides mobility needed when attending conferences, going to classes, etc.  In some cases, the need for laptops is specific for the discipline.  There is a 3-4 year replacement plan for technology.  Technology is not routinely replaced every year.
  • Laptop Policy – Gov. Rell is seriously concerned about stolen laptops and the security of other mobile devices such as CPUs for desktops, smartphones, flash drives, external hard drives, etc. 
  • Laptops must return to the university network at least once a month. 
  • We might soon get to the point where all mobile devices are encrypted. 

Desktop Funds

  • Current machine pricing spreadsheet was distributed.
  • FY09 headcounts were finalized except PS.
  • DPW has 30 days to respond to equipment purchases funded with CSUS 2020 money.  After 30 days, there is automatic approval. 
  • Upon request, Lorraine will attend school ITC/dept. meeting to discuss equipment money and address any other issues/questions/topics.
