PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER - AMISTAD AMERICA INC.

Amistad America, Inc. seeks nominations for and expressions of interest in the position of President and Chief Executive Officer.

A national, non-profit educational organization, Amistad America, Inc., promotes reconciliation and harmony among people from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds through ownership and operation of the Freedom Schooner, Amistad. The vessel visits ports nationally and internationally as an ambassador for friendship and good will. It serves as a floating classroom to teach the historic lessons of perseverance, cooperation, leadership and justice inherent in the Amistad Incident of 1839 when African captives aboard a coastal trading schooner rebelled and eventually won their fight for freedom in a landmark United States Supreme Court case.

Amistad America, Inc. was created in 1996 by a group of interested organizations. With support from the State of Connecticut and initial sponsors, Mystic Seaport was contracted to construct a re-creation of the historic vessel. The Freedom Schooner Amistad was launched in 2000. The organization is based in New Haven, Connecticut, employing 6-8 staff and up to 13 crew members with an annual operating budget of approximately $1.5 million.

The President and CEO will join an organization that has met with tremendous support and enthusiasm everywhere Amistad has visited. The organization is expanding its education and outreach programs every year. The potential for even greater impact has energized the board, staff, volunteers and citizens of communities across the country and internationally. Amistad America, Inc. seeks an individual with demonstrated commitment to the values expressed in the organization’s mission. Also essential are: vision, solid leadership experience, demonstrated ability to raise significant funds, and the personal and professional qualities to take this organization to the next level of achievement.
