Frequently Asked Questions about WCSU's MBA Program
Q: Who teaches the MBA courses?
The instructors are full-time faculty members in the Ancell School of Business who have earned appropriate terminal degrees and who are also active consultants, members of boards of directors, expert witnesses, or former corporate or business executives. Given the Ancell School emphasis on teaching, we are not a “publish or perish” school, but many of our faculty have published books, articles in scholarly, professional, and trade publications, case studies, and instructional materials.
Occasionally a course is taught by an adjunct instructor having an outstanding background and work experience, usually as an executive or upper-level manager in a well-regarded business or organization.
Q: How many students per class?
Most MBA courses have fewer than 20 students, which promotes classroom discussions, allows for exercises and activities, and provides for access to the faculty. There are no large lecture hall classes in this program.
Q: How is the MBA program structured?
Our degree is designed for part-time (less than 9 credits per semester) study by working adults. Students take one or two evening courses each semester and summer.
Q: How quickly can the MBA program be completed?
Twenty-one (21) months is probably the shortest possible period for completing the program (given full waivers of the Core/Prerequisite Cluster courses). Most student complete their MBA degree in 2 ½ - 4 years.
Q: Is the MBA program accredited?
WCSU is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), our regional accrediting body. All WCSU programs are licensed and reviewed by the State of Connecticut.
The Ancell School aspires to maintain and demonstrate our high standards. To do so, we intend to continue our pursuit of accreditation by AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business – International).
Q: Where and when do MBA classes meet?
All MBA classes meet in the Classroom building on our convenient Westside Campus (off Exit 4 of I-84). A new Westside Campus Center opened January 2007 and provides dining and other amenities. The classrooms feature excellent instructional technology and comfort for adult students.
Most MBA classes meet for 2 ½ hours one evening each week (Monday through Thursday) for 15 or 16 weeks:
- 5:25 to 7:55 PM for the majority of the courses, and
- 8:00 to 10:30 PM for the remaining courses.
Most Summer MBA classes meet two evenings per week for eight (8) weeks (end of May though mid-July) at the same class times as above.
A few “compressed” courses (5 full days in one week, for example) are offered during the January and May intersessions.
Q: Is there an exception to the Graduate Management Admissions Test requirement?
Yes, if you have earned a post-graduate degree (for example, a Master’s degree, a JD degree), we waive the GMAT requirement.
Q: What is the minimum grade point average and the minimum GMAT score required for admission to the MBA program?
There is no minimum GPA or minimum GMAT score. We construct an admissions index number by combining your undergraduate grade point average (based on all your courses in all schools you attended) with your total GMAT score. The higher your GPA, the lower the GMAT score you need. The lower your GPA, the higher the GMAT score you need. You can discuss your particular case with the MBA Coordinator.
Q: Can I transfer graduate credits into the MBA program?
Yes, graduate courses taken at other schools may be transferable to WCSU’s MBA program. The limit on transfer credits is twelve. Please see http://www.wcsu.edu/mba/admissreq.asp. You should meet with the MBA Coordinator to discuss your situation.
