Western Connecticut State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences.  Western is located in Danbury, a city in Fairfield County, 50 miles north of New York City.  The University is located on two campuses and serves over 5,000 undergraduate and 600 graduate students.  Western is one of four comprehensive universities that comprise the Connecticut State University System. Western is divided into the School of Arts & Sciences, School of Professional Studies, School of Visual & Performing Arts, and Ancell School of Business. 

 

The School of Arts & Science’s mission is primarily teaching.  The school serves approximately 2,624 undergraduate and 118 graduate students.  The School of Arts & Sciences offers degrees in 32 programs.  Some programs lead directly to the job market, with students gaining practical experience along the way in internships and cooperative education.  Others lead to graduate school for advanced professional training.   More information on the School of Arts & Sciences can be found at http://www.wcsu.edu/sas/.

 

Responsibilities:  The University is seeking a Dean capable of promoting, developing, and sustaining the School's educational, scholarly, and public service programs.  The Dean provides collegial leadership and consensus building for faculty organized into thirteen departments – Biological & Environmental Sciences; Chemistry; Communication; Computer Science; English; History & Non-Western Cultures; Mathematics; Philosophy & Humanistic Studies; Physics, Astronomy & Meteorology; Psychology; Social Sciences; World Languages & Literature; and Writing, Linguistics, and Creative Process.  The Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.

 

Qualifications:

  • A record of teaching and scholarship, including an earned doctorate in a field appropriate to the School's curricula.

  • Academic administrative experience at the level of chairperson or above and demonstrated team-building experiences.

  • Experience in academic program development and resource management.

  • Experience with national accreditation processes.

  • An appreciation for scholarship and research in an academic setting.

  • Experience with managing information technology and its role in education.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and to maintain good working relationships with all internal and external constituencies of a University.

  • Experience with campus governance, collective bargaining agreements, faculty selection and faculty evaluation is preferred.

  • Experience in obtaining grants and fundraising is preferred.
