The Department of Music
at Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) is seeking a highly
skilled and experienced jazz artist and educator to fill a tenure-track
appointment as the Assistant Coordinator of Jazz Studies. The successful
candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the jazz studies area,
including jazz improvisation, jazz theory, jazz arranging, jazz
pedagogy, and jazz history as well as conduct the WCSU Jazz Ensemble and
coordinate the jazz combo program. Additional responsibilities depend on
candidate’s areas of expertise and Department needs. The successful
candidate must maintain an active program of performance, research,
and/or scholarly and creative activities. The candidate will also be
expected to participate in appropriate department, university and
professional service, and coordinate local and regional recruitment of
students in the jazz area.
Qualifications:
A completed Masters degree in jazz studies or other relevant field is
required. A doctorate or significant professional experience in the
field of jazz studies is preferred. The successful candidate must
provide evidence of at least three to five years of successful college
teaching experience and demonstrate professional level artistry in the
areas of jazz performance, composition, and pedagogy. As WCSU is a
dynamic, diverse workplace, the proven ability to work effectively with
people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures is highly valued.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
