Human Resources - Employee Recognition Program Policies/Procedures

The purpose of this document is to establish the policies and procedures for administering the Employee Recognition Program.  The Employee Recognition Program has been established to recognize extraordinary performance of employees of Western Connecticut State University.  The program will consist of two (2) phases.  Each phase is discussed in detail below.

Phase One - Semester employee recognition award

This phase of the program looks to recognize employee performance on a monthly basis. 

  • There will be two (2) Semester Employee Recognition Awards given each academic year.  One award will be given during the Fall Semester (approximately December) and the other award will be given during the Spring Semester (approximately May.)
  • Each year in September and January all employees of the University will be sent a nomination form so they can nominate someone for the Semester Employee Recognition Award.  Nomination forms will also be available at anytime in the Human Resources Department and on our website.
  • All nomination forms will be kept active for the entire academic year.  If a nominee does not win the award one semester they will still be considered for the next semester award during the same academic year.  After the Spring Semester Employee Recognition Award is given out in May of each year all remaining nominations will be null and void.
  • There will be a Semester Employee Recognition Committee established every two (2) years.  This committee will consist of a representative from each bargaining unit (Management/Confidential, SUOAF, AAUP, Clerical, Protective Services, Administrative & Residual, and Maintenance).  This committee will be chaired by the Director of Employee Relations who will be a non-voting member.
  • The Semester Employee Recognition Committee will receive all nominations each semester to review and to vote upon.  There will be a 10 point rating scale used to determine the winner.  Each committee member will award 10 points to the nominee they would like to see win the award all the way down to 1 point for their least likely nominee to win the award.  After the committee members complete their ratings they will submit them to the chair of the Semester Employee Recognition Committee who will then total them up.  The nominee who receives the most points will be recommended to Dr. Schmotter to receive the Semester Employee Recognition Award for that semester.  Dr. Schmotter will then make the final decision.
  • No member of the Semester Employee Recognition Committee will be allowed to win the Semester Employee Recognition Award due to a conflict of interest.  Also, since the rating scales are returned to the Human Resources Department no member of the Human Resources Department will be allowed to win one of the awards due to a conflict of interest.
  • Once the votes have been tabulated the winner will be notified and asked if they would like to accept the honor.  If they do they will have a public presentation of the Semester Employee Recognition Award by Dr. Schmotter as well as having a private luncheon in their honor.

Phase Two - governor's service award

This phase of the program recognizes employees at a statewide level.

  • The winner of the Fall & Spring Semester Employee Recognition Awards will be Western Connecticut State University’s nominees to win the Governor’s Service Award.
  • These employees will be presented with the Governor’s Service Award from the Governor at a ceremony at the State Capitol in Hartford.
