It will be another great day for student
scholarship recipients at Western when the WCSU Alumni Association’s
26th Annual Golf Tournament tees off at Richter Park in
Danbury on Monday, Sept. 26.
Carrying on a popular tradition begun in the
1980s, the annual tournament will offer alumni and friends of the
university an opportunity to enjoy a round of golf and good fun on
one of western Connecticut’s premiere courses while helping to raise
funds for the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.
Funds raised through the tournament support
annual scholarships recognizing Western undergraduate students who
have demonstrated exemplary academic achievement and participation
in university and community activities. The fund also provides for
the association’s annual award to a graduate student based on
academic performance and financial need, and the annual May Sherwood
Memorial Scholarship award to a senior in high academic standing
with a major in education.
Recipients of Alumni Association scholarships
for the 2011-12 academic year include Diana Bytyqi, Amanda Daley,
Leah Firmender, James Heffner, Jacob Humerick, Douglas Otto Jackson,
Vincent Kmetz, Kara Mendes, Amanda Nagurney, Bruna Oliveira,
Kristopher Osborne, and Stephanie Wozniak.
The tournament will be conducted in scramble
format with a shot-gun start at 10 a.m. on the Richter Park Golf
Course at 100 Aunt Hack Road in Danbury. Check-in and continental
breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m., with lunch offered from 11 a.m.
to 1 p.m. The tournament program will conclude with a player awards
reception at 3 p.m. at the Café on the Green.
WCSU alumni and members of the university
community have joined forces to plan this year’s event through their
service on the 2011 AA Golf Committee, led by Al Mead as chairman
and Ron Pugliese as honorary chairman. Other members of the
committee include Neil Wagner, Jan Maria Jagush, Heather Stone,
Theresa Eberhard Asch, Tom Crucitti, Joe Giaquinto, Eric Wellman,
Mark Allen, and Jill Cook, along with Director of Alumni Relations
Tammy Hammershoy and Director of Development Jane von Trapp.
“The Golf Committee has been active in
organizing our annual golf outing,” Mead observed. “With the support
of many departments at WCSU, we expect another successful day.
Raising funds for Alumni Association scholarships is what inspires
the members of the committee to work hard.”
Registration is open to the public to reserve
places for tournament play, at a cost of $175 per individual and
$700 per foursome. The
association also is offering a wide range of sponsorship
opportunities, with forms available by following the sponsorship
link on the “Golf Outing” page on the WCSU website.
“The Alumni Association Golf Tournament brings
together WCSU alumni, faculty, staff and friends in the Danbury area
for a great day of golf while also supporting an amazing cause —
student scholarships,” Hammershoy noted. “The success of this event
rests largely on community support and sponsorship. We welcome
anyone who wants to play in or sponsor the tournament to join us.”
