WestConn has chosen SonicWall, formerly known as MailFrontier, as its anti-spam tool. SonicWall is an internet e-mail security product used by CSU to protect against spam, viruses and other e-mail threats.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Will my quarantine area be charged against my Notes mail quota? Will my quarantine area be charged against my Notes mail quota?
No, the quarantine area is on a separate server and will not tax your Notes mail disk quota.
- How long will mail remain in my quarantine? How long will mail remain in my quarantine?
Any message that has not been deleted or unjunked from the quarantine area will be automatically be deleted after 30 days.
- How do I report spam? How do I report spam?
If a message in your InBox is spam and was not caught by SonicWall, forward it to "Report Spam" (or
reportspam@wcsu.edu). The sender address will be added to your Blocked list and the contents of the message will be sent to the SonicWall corporation for further analysis.

Not all spam will be stopped. Spammers continuously change addresses and develop new techniques. SonicWall will check for updates every 15 minutes.

There are two ways -- both require a web browser. The first involves unjunking individual messages from the Junk Mail Summary (see above information on quarantine).
The other method of access is to visit the following URL:

From here, you can view all mail that has been quarantined for you, not just what is in the current Junk Mail Summary. Additionally, you can adjust some of your personal settings.
* - You will need to supply your Notes Web username and password. Students who do not remember their Notes Web username and/or password can visit one of the computer centers on campus to get it reset. Faculty and staff should call the University Computing Help Desk (837-8467).
- How do I know if spam was quarantined for me? How do I know if spam was quarantined for me?
Each day, you will receive a Junk Mail Summary message listing any messages that were quarantined since the last summary message. If no new messages were added to your Junk Box, you will not receive a summary.
From the summary message, you can view or unjunk a message if you suspect that it may be legitimate. If you unjunk a message, it will automatically be added to your Allowed list.
- How does SonicWall work? How does SonicWall work?
The SonicWall system will sit on the edge of WCSU's campus network. It will examine all incoming Internet email (transmitted via SMTP) looking for characteristics that will distinguish legitimate email from spam.
Any message found to be legitimate will pass through to the recipient's InBox. Any message identified as spam, or likely spam, will be quarantined on the SonicWall server in the Junk Box area.
