Application deadline is Thursday, Feb. 1: WCSU hosts competition for artists to perform, exhibit on campus

DANBURY, CONN. — The Western Connecticut State University School of Visual & Performing Arts will host a competition in support of art and artists this spring. Artists of all disciplines (theatre, dance, art, music and film) — from up-and-coming artists to seasoned professionals — are encouraged to apply with either large- or small-scale projects and in various stages of completion. Through an application process adjudicated by the VPArts Commission, the selected artists will be awarded the opportunity to collaborate and present work in the university’s state-of-the-art Visual and Performing Arts Center free of charge. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, and finalists will be notified by Thursday, Feb 15. There is an application fee of $30.

The VPArts Commission will consider the following criteria when selecting the featured artists: quality of the application, quality of the event, feasibility of the work within the space, articulated need/importance of this award to the applicant and community appeal.

Exhibition opportunities are limited: May 14 – 18, May 21 – 25 and May 29 – June 1. WestConn encourages finalists to invite whomever they like — friends, family, agents, producers, curators and community members.

The university will provide, as needed: the venue, Box Office personnel and ticketing, minimal staffing available during rehearsal/setup time to provide basic services and to manage building access, limited promotion of the event, rehearsal/setup time, basic lighting, dressing rooms and a green room.

The available venues: MainStage Theatre, Veronica Hagman Concert Hall, Studio (black box) Theatre and the Gallery. For more information about the venues, visit www.wcsu.edu/svpa/svpa-center/.
