DANBURY, CONN. — The departments of History and Non-Western Cultures and Social Sciences at Western Connecticut State University will host a lecture for Black Heritage Month by Dr. Siobhan Carter-David, “Black Body Zeitgeist: Image Activism and ‘The Woke’ in Post-Obama America,” at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018, in Room 201 of the Student Center on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The talk will be free and the public is invited.

WCSU History Professors Dr. Marcy May and Dr. Joshua Rosenthal, who invited Carter-David to speak, said, “In her lecture on ‘Black Body Zeitgeist’ Dr. Carter-David will talk about the history of today’s pressing conversations about Black politics, Black aesthetics, and fashion. The relevance of this topic in the present day — a moment when people celebrate Beyoncé and follow Black social media, while dismissing movements like Black Lives Matter — is overwhelming. This talk is an opportunity to explore the connections between race, gender, popular culture, the market and communal creativity through the lens of fashion as art and politics.”

Carter-David is an assistant professor of History at Southern Connecticut State University.
