Veterans yoga at WCSU

DANBURY, CONN. — Western Connecticut State University Adjunct Instructor of Health Promotion and Exercise Sciences and Lotus Gardens Yoga Director Lara Ward will host veterans yoga sessions from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, March 21, April 11 and May 2, 2018, in Berkshire Hall, Studio A, on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The classes are free and open to the public.

Classes will be conducted by Tim Raftery and are based on resilience and mindfulness yoga as presented by the Veterans Yoga Project. Raftery is a certified Lotus Gardens Yoga School 200-hour yoga teacher, Veterans Yoga Project Mindful Resilience Yoga practitioner, WCSU alumnus and military veteran.

Student Veterans Organization Vice President Melissa May, a coordinator for the event, said, “We’ve received a lot of positive feedback and many veterans seemed to want to be involved and have something like this available for them on campus. One of my personal goals is to help build connections among veterans on campus and give them a way to form relationships with other veterans. The Student Veterans Organization has been trying to bring together the veteran community, but it has proven to be a difficult task. We hope this program will not only benefit veterans from the yoga itself, but also will bring our veteran community on campus closer together.”
