DANBURY, CONN. — Western Connecticut State University will hold a ribbon-cutting celebrating the recent opening of the WCSU Police Station in a ceremony at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2018, on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury.
University, police and community representatives will participate in the ribbon-cutting at the entrance to the Police Station, located on Roberts Avenue. WCSU President Dr. John B. Clark will offer opening remarks in front of the building, followed by a ceremonial raising of the flags of the United States and the state of Connecticut. Upon conclusion of the program, the University Police Department will welcome visitors until 1 p.m. for tours of the new facility and light refreshments. Admission will be free and the public is invited to attend.
Completed in fall 2017 at a construction cost of $6.45 million, the new station provides 10,636 square feet of space on one floor for a wide range of University Police Department law enforcement, administrative and storage functions. Facilities include a reception area; conference, interview, briefing, training, dispatch and detective squad rooms; a prisoner processing area and holding cell; evidence receiving, processing and storage rooms; and space for communications equipment, records retention, armory and lockers. The building exterior features a brick veneer on block-and-metal studs with cast-stone accents and an insulated-glass window system. A bay on one side of the building provides covered parking space for police vehicles.
The architect for the project was Jacunski Humes Architects, LLC, of Berlin. The contractor was Hawley Construction Corp., of Danbury; Arcadis, of Middletown, provided construction administration.
WCSU Chief of Police Roger Connor expressed confidence that the new station, which replaced facilities with a significantly smaller footprint on the other side of Roberts Avenue, will result in more efficient and enhanced department service to the community.
“With our new building, we can centralize and improve upon our operations to assure the delivery of police, security and safety services to students, staff, faculty and members of the public who use and enjoy our Midtown and Westside campuses,” Connor said. “The officers of the WCSU Police Department are grateful for the support we have received from the university community and administration, which has brought this wonderful facility to fruition.”
