WCSU to host Military Appreciation Week events

DANBURY, Conn. — Western Connecticut State University will host and participate in a number of events intended to honor veterans this month during Military Appreciation Week 2019.

image of WCSU Student Veterans Organization logoThe Danbury Vet Center will host a U.S. Marine Corps Birthday Celebration at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, at the center, 457 North Main St. in Danbury.

WCSU will honor veterans with a Veterans Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11. The ceremony is in Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury, and will celebrate current and former service members. A casual lunch reception will follow.

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, the WCSU Student Veterans Organization will host an info table from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center lobby on the Midtown campus. Information will be provided to help raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. The community is encouraged to show support and help promote awareness for veteran suicide prevention by completing “The 22 Pushup Challenge” and/or by picking up a free wristband that symbolizes a commitment to support veterans.

Wednesday, Nov. 13, will feature an Obstacle Course Challenge from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the lawn of the Science Building on the Midtown campus. There will be music and free food for attendees.

On Thursday, Nov. 14, the WCSU Office of Veteran Affairs will host an Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 101 of Old Main on the Midtown campus. Veteran Affairs Coordinator Kelly Visokay will be available to greet visitors. Visokay provides support for veterans to ensure a smooth transition to civilian life and assists with issues such as academic preparedness, health and wellness, socialization issues and administrative requirements.
