WCSU to hold African Film Festival in February
DANBURY, CONN. — Western Connecticut State University Professor of Anthropology Dr. Rob Whittemore will host the 14th annual African Film Festival every Wednesday in February 2013. There will be two showings each Wednesday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. With the exception of one screening, all movies will be shown in the Student Center Theater on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. An open discussion of the film will follow each screening. Events are free and open to the public. All films have English subtitles.
“Dolé” (Money), Wednesday, Feb. 6. Youths in a local labor market in Gabon decide they deserve more from life and their actions lead to devastating consequences.
“Femmes aux Yeux Ouverts” (Women with Open Eyes), Wednesday, Feb. 13. The 6 p.m. viewing will be in the White Hall, Viewing Room 2 on the Midtown campus. This documentary is about 11 women’s experiences with female excision, arranged marriage, AIDS, reproductive health, economic freedom and political autonomy.
“Ainsi Meurent Les Anges” (And So Angels Die), Wednesday, Feb. 20. A struggling poet returns home to assist his birth-family through hard times.
“Finzan” (A Dance for the Heroes), Wednesday, Feb. 27. The film features two women’s stories of rebellion towards “the levirate” and excision.
