WCSU to present second annual James Furman Student Honors Recital
DANBURY, CONN. — The sounds of saxophones, trumpets, pianos and voices will fill the air at Western Connecticut State University next week, as the university hosts the second annual James Furman Honors Recital at noon on Monday, March 2, in Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the WestConn Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The concert will be free and the public is invited; donations to support the music department will be accepted.
The student performers will be selected the week before the recital, during the James Furman Memorial Music Endowed Scholarship competition, which honors the memory and music of James Furman, a former member of the music department. The scholarship is rewarded to the student that best exemplifies the highest level of musical performance ability, scholastic standing and contributions to the department.
About 20 students will perform music from classical to jazz. Dr. Dan Goble, chair of the music department, described the selections as “ranging from Bach to Bebop.”
