Registered Nurse (RN) graduates of associate degree programs (AD N –
associate degree in Nursing) and diploma programs have been able to earn
the baccalaureate degree at WestConn by completing a program of study
similar to that completed by undergraduate students, but including some
RN-only components that acknowledge and build upon existing knowledge
and skills. These students are enrolled as Registered Nursing
students in the RN-BS degree completion program. In order to
receive a degree from WestConn a student must complete a minimum of 30
credits and/or one half of the major (whichever is greater) at the
University. RNs may be eligible for up to 28 transfer credits.
In addition AD N graduates may be eligible for additional
transfer credit, which may be applied to the General Education, Major,
and Free Elective requirements.
Our program builds on nurses’ previous nursing education and respects
the knowledge they have developed in their practice experiences.
The two clinical experiences required for the degree (NUR 330, Nursing
in the Community and NUR 375, Nursing Practicum) are designed in
collaboration with instructors to ensure an enriching experience that
will augment each nurse’s current nursing expertise in clinical areas
with which she or he may have had little or no experience. The
Human Health Experience (NUR 336) introduces concepts in holistic
nursing practice and Pharmacotherapeutics Across the Life Span (NUR 322)
expands knowledge in the ever-changing field of pharmacology and
diagnostic modalities. Students must complete a minimum of 30
semester hours in courses offered through WestConn, including 28
semester hours of required NUR labeled courses, in order to receive a
degree from the university.
