Words of Advice to Student Nurses

Advice gathered from SNURSE-L (a mailing list for Student Nurses)

  1. Take time to reflect on what you’ve accomplished.
    - You’ve worked hard to become a well educated professional.
    - Smile with self satisfaction.
     
  2. Recognize who you are and what you are.
    - As a nurse, you’re at the heart of health care.
     
  3. Study for state boards.
    -Review the topics you wished you had aced.
     
  4. Take care of yourself.
    -Work, eat, sleep, and play. Don’t leave any of these four out.
    - Life is about more than meeting the needs of other people.
     
  5. Look for a mentor on your new job.
    - By now you know how a “good” nurse acts, looks, and talks.
    - Recognize superior nursing in others and mirror those characteristics.
     
  6. Be patient with yourself.
    - Do not expect savvy and organization the first time around.
    - De safe and sensitive and the rest will follow in time.
     
  7. Develop a sense of humor.
    - Laughing is good for you and relieves stress in the process.
     
  8. Recognize that nursing, like life is rarely black and white.
    - Everyday you’ll deal with controversial human issues.
    - Know your own feelings, but don’t expect everyone to agree with you.
     
  9. Remember that nursing---done right is a tough job.
    - We’ve done our best to prepare you for the relentlessness of human need.
     
  10. Care. Caring is the REAL power of nursing.
    -It gives you the right and the strength to demand the best for yourself, you profession and your patients.
