ConnCAP/Upward Bound/Danbury Public Schools Collaborative Programs Services

ALL STUDENTS – 9th – 12th Grades

    1. Teacher-Advisor meets weekly with students to discuss progress/problems. (Advisor is a teacher or other staff member at the student school.)
    2. Status Reports are mailed home each marking period.
    3. Telephone calls. Advisors will call home to speak with parents if problems develop: such as, frequent absence or tardiness to school; misbehavior or poor school work. Parents are urged to call advisors at any time for information on their child.
    4. Home Conferences at the end of each term will be conducted by advisors with parents and students to review students’ contact and written evaluations by each of the students’ major teachers. Students will negotiate a contract for next marking period at this conference.
    5. Special Conferences will be held at home or school at any time it appears necessary to deal with any problem that needs special attention.
    6. Tutors can be arranged for students who are having difficulty with a subject and who are unable to get extra help from their teacher. We encourage students to use the school’s tutoring labs during school. Tutoring will take place after or during school at the student’s high school. Students are to ask their advisors if they need a tutor.
    7. Career counseling activities are available which are aimed at helping students become aware of career possibilities and interests.
    8. Relationship with Public Schools. Danbury Public Schools Collaborative/Upward Bound has established a friendly, cooperative relationship with Danbury High School. The school is quite willing to listen to our suggestions and to work with us to solve student problems. However, it is important that students and parents also make use of the school’s services and staff. Please ask us to help with a school- related problem only after you have failed to get satisfaction from the school.
    9. Agency Referrals. Danbury Public Schools Collaborative/Upward Bound can put families in contact with medical services, psychiatric counseling, programs for substance abuse and other services if needed. Call the Director, in confidence, for additional information on these services.
    10. Community service.  Students are required to complete 12 hours.  This may be done within the program’s activities or with outside programs, but hours need to be recorded and signed off using a program form available from the Danbury Public Schools Collaborative/ Upward Bound office.

  1. 11th & 12th GRADERS
    1. College Board Examinations and Workshops. All students who plan to attend college are required to register for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Fees waivers will be provided by the program. Juniors taking the SATs will begin compulsory classes in January and continue taking these classes in their senior year until they take the test for the second time in Nov./Dec.
    2. Career & College Counseling. As they approach their senior year and the important decision of where they will attend college and what they plan to study, the students’ involvement in career counseling will be critical in helping them with these decisions. On an individual basis, seniors will be assisted in the selection of three to six post-secondary institutions to which they will apply during the first term of school. Application fee waivers will be provided by the program.
    3. Financial Aid Workshop. In October of the senior year, Parents will meet with a staff to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); which is used to determine a student’s eligibility for the financial aid program and other forms of aid.
    4. College Scholarship Awards. Participants will be eligible to apply for merit scholarships and grants offered by colleges and universities
    5. Students have the opportunity to participate in dual-enrollment programs
