WCSU was prepared for Hurricane Irene

Due to worsening projections for the path and intensity of Hurricane Irene, Western closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Aug. 27 – 29, 2011.

Move-in day for freshmen and opening ceremonies took place on Friday, Aug. 26, as scheduled. The university closed following the end of the freshman dinner.

All normal operations were suspended and residential students were asked to return to their homes beginning Friday, Aug. 26. Accommodations for those students who could not leave were made at Pinney and Centennial Halls on the Westside campus on Saturday evening. These residence halls have emergency power back-up. Limited food service also was provided.

Move-in day for returning students was canceled for Saturday, Aug. 27, and instead took place Monday, Aug. 29. All events and ceremonies that were scheduled for Saturday and Sunday were canceled. All classes for Monday, Aug. 29, were canceled in anticipation of storm aftermath and clean up needs.

The university monitored Irene’s path, speed and intensity and kept the campus community apprised of closure and cancelation decisions on the WCSU website, Facebook page, Twitter feed and through the university’s MIR3 emergency communication network.
