President Schmotter's Budget Update - March 17, 2009
President James W. Schmotter met with students, faculty and staff on March 17, 2009, in the Student Center Theater to share information about the state of Connecticut’s budget deficit and its effect on WestConn’s operations.
He made these points:
- There appears to be an increasing demand for WCSU education in the college admissions marketplace; all indicators are up for Fall 2009, some (like housing reservations) are coming in at record levels.
- The process of developing the biennial budget for the state of Connecticut for FY10 and FY11 is turning out to be a very complex journey full of political intrigue, debate and negotiation up in Hartford. It is during this journey that the threat of closing a university in the CSUS system arose, and with it the rumors that WestConn would be targeted. I stress emphatically that this is not going to happen. We have been educating students for 105 years and we will continue to educate students for another 105 years, at least.
- We will continue to provide our students the very best educational experience possible.
- We will endeavor to continue the momentum that this university has built up over the past four years.
- And we will do absolutely everything possible to minimize threats to employment.
