Letter from the Dean of Arts and Sciences

Welcome the School of Arts and Sciences at
Western Connecticut State University.
A&S is home
to fourteen departments, eighteen
undergraduate
majors and five
graduate
majors, and a host of interesting ways to combine majors with
minors, allowing students to develop unique combinations of
knowledge in preparation for their lives ahead.
We are also the heart of the
general education
curriculum, insuring that all students at Western acquire
fundamental skills in communication, writing, mathematics and
analytic thought, while at the same time being exposed to a wide
range of disciplines to complement their major focus of study.
A&S has a talented group of faculty who are
dedicated to the art of good teaching. We care
most about reaching students, helping them find the best paths for
their education, and ultimately providing a compass for navigating
life after graduation. Our faculty brings passion to
the classroom, sharing their curiosity, their ongoing professional
development, and their original research with students. At Western,
faculty members are readily available during
weekly office hours, by
appointment, email, and phone. We take advising and
student support very seriously here. If you have a question, just
ask.
Our students have the opportunity to
participate in internships
and co-ops locally, regionally, and in New York. We
encourage students to take the knowledge found in the classroom and
apply it in a workplace context. This tying
together of education with careers and community is central to our
goals for our students. Seeing theory and practice in
action is the best way to build confidence, broaden knowledge, and
strengthen resumes.
Arts & Sciences also has a strong track record
of students winning Fulbright awards, scholarships to graduate
school, and being accepted to graduate programs in medicine, law,
teaching, communication, history, politics, and more.
Our graduates are investigating environmental issues for the
Department of Transportation in Connecticut, conducting research at
Yale, producing sports coverage for NBC, publishing original works
of fiction, starting new businesses, and engaging in their
communities.
In sum, Arts & Sciences at Western is large
enough to provide many educational options and small enough to know
you well. We are devoted to learning and to teaching. We invite you
to come and explore the world of ideas and possibilities with us.
