WESTCONN DOWNED BY WNEC, 13-2

DANBURY, CT – The Western Connecticut State University baseball lost to Western New England College, 13-2, on Thursday night in a non-conference tilt on Westside Field.

WNEC (32-8) put three runs on the board in the first inning with the help of three hits, two walks, and a sac fly.  The Colonials (11-26) retaliated quickly with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first behind two doubles and two sac-flies.  Senior shortstop Nick Parker (Old Saybrook, CT) and junior second baseman Andy Powers (Stratford, CT) had the doubles while left fielder Ryan Gorra (Waterford, CT) and designated hitter James Furino (Branford, CT) recorded the RBI’s.

The Golden Bears continued to put runs on the board scoring two more in the second followed by one in each of the next five innings as WNEC starting pitcher Jason Pizzoferrato retired 14 batters in a row from the first inning through the sixth.  With the score 10-2, the Colonials threatened in the eighth and ninth putting two runners on base in each inning but could not get another run across.  WNEC plated three more in the ninth for the 13-2 final.

Pizzoferrato won his ninth game of the year for the visitors as he had plenty of offensive help from the Golden Bears’ 17 hits.  He allowed just five hits and two runs while walking one and striking one out.  Colonial starter Josh Bertash (Tolland, CT) was saddled with the loss as he lasted just two and one-third innings yielding six runs on seven hits.

WestConn finishes up its regular season with a Little East Conference double-header against UMass Boston on Saturday, May 6.  Game one is slated for noon.

WESTCONN BASEBALL FALLS TO EASTERN CONNECTICUT,
11-4, IN LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE PLAY

DANBURY, CT – The Western Connecticut State University baseball team fell to in-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University, 11-4, in Little East Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Westside Field in Danbury.

Eastern Conn. (23-13, 8-4) took advantage of three hits and heads up base running to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning; right fielder Eric O’Toole had a two-out two-RBI single to help the Warriors jump out to the early lead.  In the second inning the visitors took advantage of two walks and two Colonial errors to make it a 5-0 game after two.

Eastern scored one more run in the third and fourth innings to make it a 7-0 game as Warrior starting pitcher Justin Davis faced the minimum 12 Colonials (10-25, 3-9) despite giving up a hit to senior catcher Adam Kaplan (Stratford, CT) in the third inning.

Each team went scoreless in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings before Eastern broke the silence with two more runs in the eighth on a sac-fly and a hit to put the visitors ahead 9-0.  The Colonials began to make some noise in the eighth as Davis was relieved for pitcher Trey Bongiovanni.  WestConn piled on four runs with the help of a bases-loaded one out double off the bat of freshman leftfielder Ryan Gorra (Waterford, CT) which scored three runs followed by a Matt Gardiner (Terryville, CT) double which plated Gorra to make it a 9-4 game.
The four runs would be all the Colonials could muster, however, as the Warriors tacked on two more in the top of the ninth for the 11-4 final.

Davis earned the win for Eastern while freshman Dennis Accomando (Monroe, CT) took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season.  Accomando struck out six, surrendering five earned runs in five innings.

WestConn hosts non-conference Mount St. Vincent at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 1

RIC & WESTERN CONNECTICUT SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER

Providence, RI—Rhode Island College and Western Connecticut split a doubleheader in a battle of Little East Conference baseball rivals on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonials scored four runs in the top of third inning in game one and went on to win, 4-2. The Anchormen sent a message back in game two, erupting for four runs in the bottom of the first as RIC went on to win, 7-2.

RIC sophomore starting pitcher Eric Thibault (Somerset, MA) was solid for the majority of his eight-inning outing in game one. Western Connecticut scored four runs, all which came with two out, in the third inning. Thibault (4-4) kept the Anchormen within striking distance the rest of the way, striking out three and allowing eight hits on the day.

RIC took an early lead on a sophomore first baseman Jim Connell’s (North Smithfield, RI) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.

The Colonials got an RBI double from freshman left fielder Ryan Gorra (Waterford, CT), as well as RBI singles from sophomore right fielder Matt Gardiner (Terryville, CT) and junior designated hitter James Furino (Branford, CT), as Western Connecticut jumped into the lead in the third.

RIC threatened in the eighth as sophomore third baseman Pete Olson (North Providence, RI) tripled and scored on freshman Mike McDonnell’s (Peabody, MA) RBI double.

The Anchormen loaded the bases, but Colonials’ freshman reliever Ryan Slootmaker (Pequannock, NJ) got freshman left fielder Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI) to ground out and end the threat.

Western Connecticut senior starting pitcher Zane Honious (Wallingford, CT) kept RIC hitters off balance all game and benefited from three double plays to earn his second win (2-3) of the season. Slootmaker earned his third save.

RIC junior starting pitcher Caleb Barber (Mystic, CT) came back with a strong outing in game two, allowing two runs on nine hits, to go along with two strikeouts, over seven innings to earn his fourth win (4-2) of the season.

The only damage the Colonials did was on solo home runs by Furino and Gardiner in the second and third innings, respectively.

Anchorman sophomore reliever Eric Fama (Wappingers Falls, NY) pitched two innings and struck out the side in the top of the ninth to seal the win. Junior catcher Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI) went 3-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI.

Olson, who went 2-for-3 in the game, hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first to cap the four-run effort.

Western Connecticut senior pitcher Brian Krost (Stamford, CT) took the loss (2-2), allowing six runs, of which only two were earned, on nine hits over five and two-thirds innings of work.

WESTCONN GETS SPLIT AGAINST PLYMOUTH STATE

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University and Western Connecticut State University split a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Panther Park, with PSU taking the opener, 8-3, and WestConn winning the nightcap, 6-2. The twinbill was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved up a day to avoid a potential rainout.

Sophomore Jim VanGyzen (Foster, R.I.) allowed only six hits and three runs while striking out 10 to lift the Panthers to victory in the opener. Freshman Patrick Kantor (Southbury, Conn.) reached base all five times to lead Western in the nightcap, collecting three hits and two walks and knocking in three runs. Both teams are now 2-5 in the LEC, while PSU is 9-16 overall and WCSU is 6-18.

PSU hammered out 17 hits to win the opener as VanGyzen picked up his first win of the season. Seven different Panthers had two hits in the contest. Junior Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) and senior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) led the way, driving in two runs apiece.

Junior Andy Powers (Stratford, Conn.) had three hits and knocked in two to lead the visitors in Game One.

Kantor, Power and sophomore Matt Gardiner (Terryville, Conn.) all collected three hits for Western in the nightcap, with Powers scoring three times. The Colonials took the lead with a pair of runs in the first inning, added two more in the fifth, and put insurance runs on the board in the final two innings.

Freshman Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) hit his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap, but PSU managed only one run the rest of the way. That came in the sixth inning when Rousseau doubled and came around to score on a pair of infield grounders.

Senior Brian Krost (Stamford, Conn.) earned the win for WestConn in the second game, working seven innings and giving up six hits and two runs while striking out nine. Freshman Ryan Slootmaker (Pequannock, N.J.) pitched the last two innings for his second save.

PSU returns to action Monday with a non-conference make-up game against Becker College at Panther Park (3:30 p.m.) WestConn. returns home to host Stevens Tech Monday in a non-conference match-up (7:30 p.m.)

Westfield State Wins It In The Tenth, 11-10 Over WestConn

WESTFIELD – Freshman relief pitcher Steve Sullivan (Quincy) rapped a run-scoring single in the 10th inning to lift Westfield State to an 11-10 victory over Western Connecticut State University on April 10.

The victory improved Westfield’s record to 11-10. Western Connecticut is 5-16.

The three hour-plus game featured a total of 30 hits, including four home runs, nine pitchers, and five lead changes.

Westfield held a 6-2 lead thru six innings but Western Connecticut tied the score with a four-run seventh. The big blow was a two-run homer by sophomore catcher Matt Gardiner (Terryville, CT) made it 6-6. Gardiner also had a solo homer in the fourth.

Westfield scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Pat Jaehnig. Western Connecticut had an excellent opportunity to turn a double play on the Jaehnig grounder, but the relay throw to first base sailed wide left. It would have been the fifth double play of the game for the Colonials.

Western Connecticut took a 9-7 lead in the eighth when sophomore first baseman Matt Perper (New City, NY) smashed a two-out, three-run homer deep over the leftfield fence.

But the Owls regained the lead with three runs in the home half of the eighth. Freshman P.J. Hoynoski (Westfield) ripped an RBI double down the leftfield line, and Justin Parr pounded an RBI triple to right-centerfield. Parr scored on sacrifice fly by Steve Burndrett.

Sullivan, who has four pitching saves this season, entered the game for the Owls in the ninth but was unable to hold the lead. James Furino drew a walk to lead off the inning and scored on a triple by Ryan Gorra (Waterford, CT). However, Gorra was stranded at third on two infield groundouts and a popup to the shortstop.
Westfield state baseball game – page 2-2-2

After Westfield stranded runners at first and third in the ninth, Sullivan threw a scoreless 10th inning then picked up the pitching victory with his game-winning hit.

Ryan Shimmon (Great Barrington) drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a groundout by Burndrett. Jaehnig was intentionally walked, then Sullivan lined a first-pitch single down the rightfield line to easily plate Shimmon.

Shimmon was 3 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Parr was 2 for 4 with three runs scored and his RBI triple. Freshman designated hitter/catcher Scott Schuster (Westfield) was 2 for 4 with a two-run homer in the Owls’ four-run first inning.

For Western Connecticut, Gardiner was 3 for 6 with three RBI on his two homers. Perper was 2 for 5 with a homer and five RBI.

Western Connecticut, Southern Maine Split DH
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Eddie Skeffington’s (Everett, Mass.) RBI single in the eighth inning snapped a 9-9 tie and the University of Southern Maine Huskies went on to defeat the Western Connecticut State University Colonials, 11-9, in the second game to salvage a split of the teams’ Little East Conference doubleheader at the USM Baseball Field Saturday.
In the first game, senior Zane Honious (Wallingford, Conn.) pitched a complete game two-hitter as the Colonials prevailed 5-1.
The split leaves the Huskies with a 9-8 record overall and a 2-2 mark in Little East play. With their first win in conference play, the Colonials are now 5-15 overall and 1-4 in the Little East.
In the nightcap, the Colonials tied the game at 9-9 in the top half of the eighth on an RBI single by sophomore Mike Perper (New York, N.Y.).
The Huskies rallied for a pair of runs in bottom half of the inning to gain the win. Freshman Mike D’Andrea (Portland, Maine/Deering) led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. D’Andrea would score the go-ahead run on Skeffington’s single to center field. Junior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) followed with a single, and, after advancing to second when Skeffington was thrown out trying to steal third, scored on a single by junior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine).
Senior right-hander Andrew Portwine (Gorham, Maine) picked up the win with 4.1 innings of solid relief work. Portwine allowed just four hits, two walks and one run while striking out four to pick up his first win of the season.
Senior MIke Troester (New Milford, Conn.), the third of four Colonials pitchers, was saddled with the loss.
Arsenault paced the Huskies’ attack with three singles and three RBI. Perper led the Colonials’ 14-hit offense with three hits. Junior Andy Powers (Stratford, Conn.), freshmen Ryan Gorra (Waterford, Conn.), Patrick Kantor (Southbury, Conn.) and Ryan Koschmeider (Groton, Conn.) each had two hits for Western.
In the first game, Honious surrendered a first inning run on a leadoff triple by Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) and an RBI groundout by Bourque, then settled in to limit the Huskies to just one hit and three walks the rest of the way. He did not give up a hit after the second inning, and retired the last eight batters he faced.
The Colonials took advantage of a costly, two-out infield error in the second inning to erase the one-run deficit. Gorra’s ground ball was booted for an error allowing senior Adam Kaplan (Stratford, Conn.) to score. Perper and Gorra later scored on senior Nick Parker’s (Old Saybrook, Conn.) single.
Western added a couple of insurance runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Parker and an RBI single by Powers.
Gorra and Koschmeider were the only repeat hitters in the game.
USM junior left-hander Peter Bergeron (Keene, N.H.) was tagged with his third loss of the season against one victory.

DAVIS PITCHES EASTERN BASEBALL PAST WESTERN CONN.
Junior righty stops former team on three hits through seven innings in 6-0 victory

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Junior right-handed pitcher Justin Davis (LISBON) gave up only three singles through seven innings and the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team benefited from 12 walks, two hit batsmen, three wild pitches and two passed balls in a 6-0 Little East Conference victory over Western Connecticut State University Sunday afternoon at the ECSU Baseball Stadium.

After leaving six runners on base through the first four innings, Eastern (9-8, 2-1 little east) finally broke through in the fifth by scoring three runs on two hits, two walks, two wild pitches and a passed ball, then added two more runs in the sixth on two hits, two walks and a hit batsman. Eastern managed only six hits in the game.

Davis gave up a two-out single in the second, a leadoff single in the fifth and a two-out single in the sixth before closing out his seven-inning performance with a 1-2-3 final inning. He fanned seven without a walk and hit one batter.

Senior second baseman Marc Garofalo (SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI) doubled in two runs in the three-run fifth inning and senior third baseman Zach Mehrbach (LYME, NH) doubled in two more in the sixth. Mehrbach reached three times with two doubles and a walk while senior first baseman Chris DeSantis (SHREWSBURY, MA) reached three times on walks and also scored a run. Trailing 3-0, Western (2-14, 0-3 little east) put two runners on in the sixth via error and Andy Powers’ single but Davis induced a ground ball to Mehrbach at third to end the threat.

Mehrbach had two putouts and five assists in the field but left the game with a hand injury while tagging out Dante Schettino to complete an inning-ending double play in the eighth.

WestConn Falls to Ramapo College, 8-4, In Home Opener

Danbury, CT- The Western Connecticut State University baseball team fell to Ramapo College, 8-4,
despite giving up just two earned runs and collecting twelve hits.

The Colonials (2-11) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as sophomore third basemen Bill Pask
(Hamden, CT) scored on an RBI single by junior shortstop Steve Schwartz (Patterson, NY). After the
Roadrunners (11-5) tied the game in the top of the fourth at one run apiece, WestConn regained the lead
as senior catcher Adam Kaplan (Stratford, CT) doubled to bring around senior center fielder Nick Parker
(Old Saybrook, CT) to make it a 2-1 game after five.

The Roadrunners rallied back, however, in the seventh as Ramapo took advantage of a Colonial error and
passed ball to score three runs in the inning to take a 4-2 advantage; one more run in the eighth for the
Roadrunners made it a 5-2 game. The Colonials continued to fight, tallying two runs in the bottom of the
eighth as pinch hitter freshman Patrick Kantor (Southbury, CT) tripled in the second run of the inning to bring
the home team within one at 5-4, with one inning to play.

In the ninth, Ramapo again took advantage of two Colonial errors as the Roadrunners scored two runs on a
bases-loaded error and one more on a passed ball to put the game away and go home with a 8-4 victory. Senior
pitcher Ryan Griffith (Dix Hills, NY) pitched well in the loss allowing just one earned run in six and 2/3 innings; he
struck out six, walked two, and allowed only five hits.

WestConn is home on Saturday, April 1 as they host a double-header against Keene State College in the
Little East Conference opener.

Little East Conference Pre-Season Baseball Poll
Southern Maine Sits Atop Poll

PROVIDENCE, RI — Southern Maine received four first place votes and 58 total points to earn top honors in the annual preseason poll of the league’s eight baseball head coaches.
A season ago, USM finished the LEC regular season with a 9-5 record, good for a second-place tie. The Huskies were the third seed in the conference tournament and fell in the first game of the third day. Expectations are once again high as the Huskies are ranked 16th-nationally in the preseason.
Right behind USM was Eastern Connecticut receiving three first place votes and 56 total points. After becoming the first program to win three consecutive NCAA Div. III New England Regional Tournament championships from 2002-2004, ECSU missed the post-season after falling in the LEC Tournament last spring. The Warriors did however finish the LEC regular season with an 11-3 record and their fourth consecutive title. ECSU currently finds itself ranked 25th-nationally this preseason.
Receiving the final first place vote to finish third in the poll was last season’s improbable tournament champion, Rhode Island College. The Anchormen, who gathered a total of 48 points, swept through the LEC Tournament as the fifth seed following a 7-7 conference regular season. RIC’s first-ever LEC title earned the squad a berth in their first NCAA Tournament in 25 years.
Not far behind in fourth place was Keene State, who finished 2005 with a 9-5 LEC record, good for the best finish in program history, a second-place tie. The Owls were quickly eliminated from last spring’s LEC Tournament, as they fell in their only two contests. KSC did however earn its first postseason berth since 1996, reaching the semifinals of the ECAC New England Tournament.
Sitting in the fifth and sixth place positions in the preseason poll, respectively, were Western Connecticut and UMass Boston. The Colonials, who garnered 31 points, finished in a fourth-place tie in the conference last season with a 7-7 LEC mark. The Beacons, with 20 points, concluded last spring with a conference mark of 6-8 which was good for sixth place.
UMass Dartmouth placed seventh in the poll with 19 points and Plymouth State was eighth with 12 points. This is where the two finished in the final conference standings a year ago as the Corsairs were 4-10 in the league while the Panthers were 3-11.
