DANBURY, CT (Apr. 7) The visitors from UMass Boston pounded out a combined 31 hits and scored a total of 30 runs in sweeping an afternoon doubleheader over Western Connecticut State University, 16-10 and 14-4, at Westside Field on Saturday afternoon.

UMass Boston got the day started by sending 10 men to the plate in the first inning of Game One, scoring six runs.  Western answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, to narrow the margin to 6-2 after one inning of play.

UMass Boston added single runs in the second, sixth, and seventh innings, while also tacking on two in the fifth, while Western also recorded single-run innings in the third and sixth.

Going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Western trailed 11-4.  After senior Mike Yates (Guilford, CT) was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the seventh, junior Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) ripped a single to left to put two on with no outs.  Yates tagged at third to score on a sacrifice-fly off the bat of senior Zack Dandrea (Wanaque, NJ).  Senior David Simone (Danbury, CT) then hit a double to right that sparked a rally in which five straight Colonials would reach base safely.  Western was helped by a bases-loaded wild-pitch, two hit batsmen and a walk, but when Yates flew out to center to end the inning, the Colonials had narrowed the UMass Boston lead to 11-10.

Sophomore Jamill Moquette (Boston, MA) led off the top of the eighth with a double to right, and was followed by three singles and walk, as the first five Beacon batters all ended up scoring, to stretch the lead to 16-10.

The Colonials managed to load the bases with only one out in their half of the eighth inning, but a strikeout and a fly to center field ended the threat with no runs scored.

Both teams went down in order in the ninth, making the final 16-10 in favor of UMass Boston.

In Game Two, freshman lead-off hitter Collin Keefer (Charlotte, NC) started the inning with a single, and scored when Moquette hit a shot over the fence in left field, in spite of the stiff breeze that was blowing in from left.  Western’s first two batters, junior Chris Alberto (Trumbull, CT) and Yates, both scored in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2, but four UMass Boston runs in the top of the second, three unearned on three Western errors, again gave the visitors an early 6-2 lead.

UMass Boston scored single runs in the third and fifth, and Alberto scored again for the Colonials in the bottom of the fifth to make the Beacon lead 8-3 entering the sixth inning.

Moquette, who finished the day with four hits, led off the sixth for UMass Boston with a single, followed by a double by junior Matt Consiglio (Southbury, CT).  Two more Western errors resulted in four unearned UMass Boston runs, as the Beacons scored a total of five in the inning to stretch the lead to 13-3.

After the first two Western batters flew out to left in the bottom of the sixth, junior Matt Rosbrough (Ansonia, CT) tried to spark a two-out rally with a triple in the gap in right-center.  Rosbrough scored when the Beacons committed an error of their on the next batter, but a single run was all the Colonials could manage, bringing the score to 13-4.

Consiglio led off the seventh for UMass Boston with a single, stole second, and then scored on a single by freshman Jack DeBiase (Prospect, CT).  Senior Wilberto Sanjuro (Boston, MA) followed with a double to right-center to put men on second and third with only one out, but the next two Beacon batters went quietly to end the threat, making the UMass Boston lead 14-4.  When Western went out in order in the bottom of the seventh, UMass Boston claimed the victory and a two-game sweep on the day.

With the losses, Western falls to 9-14 overall on the season, and remains winless at 0-4 in the Little East Conference.  UMass Boston improves to 13-9 overall, and 2-2 in the LEC.  The Colonials return to action on Tuesday, April 10th, when they travel to play in-state and Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut.  First pitch is schedule for 3:00pm.
