GORHAM, ME (Apr. 14) - Junior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) went 4 for 9 with three runs scored and nine RBI as the University of Southern Maine Huskies swept a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader from the Western Connecticut State University Colonials Saturday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium.  The Huskies took the opener 6-5 on White's ninth-inning RBI single, then came back to pound out 19 hits en route to a 21-7, seven-inning win in the nightcap.

The sweep extends the Huskies' winning streak to three games, and improved their record to 14-11 overall and 5-2 in the conference.  The Colonials, who have dropped five of their last six games, slide to 10-16 overall and 1-6 in LEC games.

In the opener, White gave the Huskies the victory with a single through the right side to score rookie Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.).  Glauser reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Sophomore Matt Powers (Portland, Maine/Deering) walked to put runners at first and second.  After an infield popout, sophomore Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) reached on an error that would have ended the inning.  White followed with his walk-off hit.

White's hit made a winner of junior southpaw Nick Douglass (Poland, Maine).  Douglass pitched 2.1 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief with three strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.  Sophomore Nick Vig (Monroe, Conn.), who came on to get the final out in the seventh inning, was the tough-luck loser for the Colonials.

The Huskies bats were alive in the second game piling up 19 hits.  White had seven RBI in the nightcap on a first-inning groundout, a grand slam homer in the third and a two-run triple in the fourth.  Powers led the offensive assault with four hits, including a double.  Senior David Ricker (Winthrop, Maine), junior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine) and sophomore Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) all had three hits.

unior Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, Conn.) had four hits, including a double and two home runs, for the Colonials.  Juniors Chris Alberto (Trumbull, Conn.) and Bob Eannotti (Shelton, Conn.), senior Mike Yates (Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Bobby  Coyne (Clinton, Conn.) each had two hits.  Rookie Joe Fedak (Sandy Hook, Conn.), the first of six Colonial hurlers, was saddled with the loss.

The Huskies built an 11-0 lead in the first three innings.  Grady had a two-run homer as part of a four-run first, and White's grand slam capped off the six-run third.

Bierfeldt and senior Zack Dandrea (Wanaque, N.J.) hit back-to-back homers for the Colonials in the fourth inning before the Huskies tacked on four more runs keyed by Ricker's two-run single and White's two-run triple.  Bierfeldt hit his second round tripper, a two-run shot in the sixth.  Chadwick slammed a three-run homer for the Huskies in the bottom of the sixth.  The game ended in the seventh inning on the 10-run rule.

Southern Maine will travel to Norton, Mass., tomorrow (1:00 p.m.) to face nationally ranked Wheaton College.  Western Connecticut is off until Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) when it hosts nationally ranked in-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University.
