DANBURY, CT (Mar. 25) - Sophomore righty Nick Vig (Monroe, CT) pitched a mercy-rule shortened complete-game shutout in Western Connecticut State University’s 18-0 victory over University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the opener of a doubleheader at Westside Field on LEC Prostate Awareness Day on Saturday.

In the second game, senior righty Pat Lavey (Cranston, RI) pitched a run-rule shortened complete game for the Corsairs.  He allowed seven runs, five of them earned, on 13 hits and struck out four as the Corsairs defeated the Colonials, 19-7. Lavey is now 3-0 on the season.

Vig, now 2-5 on the season, struck out the side looking in the opening inning with a biting curve keeping the UMass Dartmouth batters off balance.  Four of his first five strike outs ended with the umpire pulling the string.  He allowed just one walk while scattering five hits in the victory.

The Colonials pounded out 17 hits and scored tied their season high for runs scored.  Although, the Corsairs committed six errors, only one of the 18 runs scored were unearned.

Western scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) drove in the Colonials first run with a sacrifice fly to right field.  Mike Yates (Guilford, CT) scored on a wild pitch and Zach Dandrea (Wanaque, NJ) and David Simone (Danbury, CT) capped off the scoring when Kyle Savo (West Haven, CT) singled them in with a roller through the right side.  The Colonials took advantage of three first-inning errors by the Corsairs.

The Colonials scored seven runs in the fourth inning off starter and loser Karney Boff (Dighton, MA), who is now 4-3.  Bobby Coyne (Clinton, CT) drove in three runs with a Texas-League single with the bases loaded.  Five other Western players registered an RBI in the frame.

They added a pair of runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth off reliever P. J. Sanfacon (Framingham, MA).
Boff allowed eight hits and 11 earned runs while struck out three and walked five before making way for Kyle Hamel (New Bedford,  MA).

In the nightcap, the Colonials scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning for their third straight Little East Conference game.

Dandrea belted a two-run double to the wall in left and Simone and Savo added a run-scoring double and single, respectively.

UMass Dartmouth lit up the scoreboard in the top of the second inning when Dan DeMello (Tauton, MA) singled in Luke Bomback (Somerset, MA) who laced a one-out double to deep right center.

The Corsairs chased starter C. J. Sousa (Danbury, CT) in the top of the third inning. The Immaculate High School graduate allowed seven hits and four runs while walking one.

Dave Alarcon (Plymouth, CT) came on in the third with runners on first and second.  He walked the first batter he faced Nate Farias (Fall River, MA) before inducing Wayne Holz (Billerica, MA) to line sharply to Dandrea for the third out.

Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA) had an RBI ground out and Bomback and Dan DeMello registered an RBI triple and single in back-to-back at bats.

Western went ahead, 5-4 in the bottom of the third when Dandrea doubled and moved over to third on a pass ball.  He came across on Simone’s sacrifice fly to left field.

A run-scoring double by UMD’s Worden knotted the game, again, in the top of the fourth.

The Corsairs took a 6-5 lead in the fifth when it scored an unearned run after Bierfeldt bobbled Bolz’s single and Farias came in to score after stopping at third base.

A spectacular play by 2011 Rawlings Gold Glove winner Yates in the top of the sixth kept the Colonials’ deficit at one run.  He climbed the wall in left center and robbed Worden of at least a run-scoring double, then he threw into Jeff John (Trumbull, CT) who relayed to Dandrea to double up John Granahan (Hanover, MA) at second base.

Sixes riddled the scoreboard after Bill Eannotti (Shelton, CT) scored an unearned run on a Matt Rosbrough (Ansonia, CT) ground out for the first out in the bottom of the sixth inning.  It was the game’s third deadlock.
Freshman Joe Fedak (Sandy Hook, CT) came on to relieve Alarcon in the seventh for his team-leading 12th appearance.  Alarcon left runners on first and third after going three and a third innings, giving up six hits while striking and walking two.  Both of Fedak’s inherited runners came into score to close out Alarcon’s line with four runs, three of them earned.

Bomback scored on a fielder’s choice and Corey Allison (Tauton, MA) came in on a bloop single by Bolz. Bedward Ortiz (La Vega, DR) drove in Farias.  Ortiz and Bolz scored on a double by Medeiros to end Fedak’s day and give the visitors an 11-6 advantage.  Coach Susi was forced to use four pitchers in the seventh as UMass Dartmouth scored eight runs on eight hits (six singles and a pair of double) to widen the gap to 14-6 as it sent 13 men to the plate.

Eannotti belted his second home run of the day and seventh of the season to close out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth.

Alarcon, one of six pitchers for Western, suffered the loss and is now 0-2 for the Colonials.

Yates finished with five hits on the day after going 4-for-4 in the opener. Bierfeldt, Dandrea, Simone and Savo each had four hits for the Colonials.

Leading UMD's hitting attack were Allison who went 5-for-6 with four RBI in the nightcap. Medeiros had four runs batted in while Bomback went 4-for-6 with two RBI and four runs scored.

Western, weather permitting, will play host to Mount St. Mary in a non-conference game on Monday, April 23. First pitch is slated for 5 pm.
