Ramapo scores early and late to top Western, 9-4

Zack Dandrea sets new Western team record with 39th career double

Box Score

DANBURY, CT (Apr. 30) Four of the first five batters scored for Ramapo College in the top of the first inning, but the Roadrunners needed runs in the late innings to hold off a comeback bid by Western Connecticut State University to claim a 9-4 victory Monday afternoon at Westside Field.

Junior Dave Jacob (Vernon, NJ) started things early for Ramapo with a double to right and scored when junior Christian Spurr (Warren, NJ) belted a one-out homer over the fence in straightaway center field.  Junior Matthew Hancock (Old Lyme, CT) singled, followed by a double off the fence in centerfield by freshman Chris Werr (Pequannock, NJ) to put two runners in scoring position with only one out.  After a sharp liner to second base for out number two, senior Joseph Somma (Toms River, NJ) doubled off the fence in left to give the Roadrunners a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, only one batter was retired, but two Ramapo base-runners where thrown out to end the inning quickly for the Roadrunners.  Senior David Simone (Danbury, CT) got things started for Western with a one-out walk in the bottom of the second.  Senior Kyle Savo (West Haven, CT) doubled over the head of the right fielder to score Simone, and senior Tim Nelson (Manchester, CT) hit a sharp single through the left side of the infield to put runners on first and third with two outs.  Sophomore Bobby Coyne (Clinton, CT) ended the threat when he drilled a liner to right.

Hancock hit a solo homer in the top of the third for a 5-1 Ramapo lead.  In the Western half of the third, junior Chris Alberto (Trumbull, CT) led off with a single, followed by a single on a hit-and-run by senior Mike Yates (Ansonia, CT).  Junior Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) singled up the middle to score Alberto and chase Ramapo starter Walker Larson (Mahwah, NJ) from the game.  Sophomore Jeff John (Trumbull, CT) moved the runners up with a bunt, but a pop-up to short and a strikeout ended the Colonial threat.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Western narrowed the Ramapo margin to 5-3.  Senior Zack Dandrea (Wanaque, NJ) hit a two-out double to deep center, giving him 39 doubles for his career at Western and establishing a new team record for doubles.  Simone singled to right, scoring Dandrea, and making the score 5-3 after five innings of play.

After a quiet sixth inning, sophomore righty Zack Philippas (Seymour, CT) came on in relief for Western in the seventh and walked the first three batters to load the bases with no outs.  Two sacrifice flies scored two more Ramapo runs, and the fourth walk of the inning followed by a wild pitch put runners on second and third with two out.  A hard grounder back to the mound ended the inning.

Yates led off the bottom of the seventh by lining a single up the middle, and quickly stole second.  The next two Western batters went quietly, but Simone hit a single to right that scored Yates from second.  Simone was thrown out at second on the play for the inning’s third out, and the score was 7-4 after seven.

Jacob drew a one-out walk for Ramapo in the top of the eighth and stole second base.  A two-out double to left center, followed by a single, scored two more Ramapo runs, and the Colonials brought freshman right-hander Joe Fedak (Sandy Hook, CT) on in relief.  After a pop-up to third base, Ramapo led 9-4.  In both of the eighth and ninth innings, Western moved runners to third base, but failed to score, giving the visitors from Ramapo College a 9-4 final margin of victory.

With the loss, Western falls to 15-20 on the season, while Ramapo improves to 29-11.  The Colonials return to action on Tuesday, May 1, when they host Manhattanville College for a single game beginning at 5:00pm.
