Western baseball defeats Manhattanville, 10-4 on Senior Night

Box Score

DANBURY, CT (May 1) Senior lefthander Josh Vaghi (Monroe, CT) pitched five strong innings to pick up his first victory of the season as the Western Connecticut State University baseball team celebrated Senior Day with a 10-4 win over Manhattanville College Tuesday evening at Westside Field.

Manhattanville was successful in getting hits off Vaghi in the first three innings, but after picking off a Valiant runner in the first and pitching out of jams in the second and third, Vaghi got Manhattanville out in order in the fourth inning to keep the Valiants scoreless.

In the bottom of the first, Western scored two unearned runs with the help of three Manhattanville errors.  After junior Chris Alberto (Trumbull, CT) was safe on an error to start the inning for Western, senior Mike Yates (Guilford, CT) singled and moved to second on a throwing error by the Valiant shortstop.  Junior Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) then hit a sacrifice fly deep to center field to score Alberto, but the throw to third was well off the mark and Yates trotted home as well.

In the Western half of the third inning, Alberto led off with a single and scored on a one-out triple to right by Bierfeldt.  Senior Zack Dandrea (Wanaque, NJ) hit an RBI single to score Bierfeldt, and after a walk and a single by junior Bill Eannotti (Shelton, CT), the Colonials had the bases loaded with one out.  Senior Kyle Savo (West Haven, CT) drove in two with a single through the right side of the infield, and senior Tim Nelson (Manchester, CT) drove in Western’s final run of the inning to put the Colonials on top 7-0 after three innings.

Neither team produced a hit in the fourth inning, but in the top of the fifth, Manhattanville finally got on the board when junior Johnny LoVetere (Southbury, CT) led off with a single to left-center and senior Danny Fiorito (Yonkers, NY) walked.  Junior Sean Ferguson hit a one-out single up the middle to load the bases, and after a liner to Dandrea at second for the second out of the inning, freshman Bobby Guerra (Bronx, NY) came through with a clutch two-run, two-out single to left that scored two runs, cutting the Western lead to 7-2.

The bottom of the Western order went down in order in the fifth, and Manahattanville narrowed the gap to 7-3 with another run in the top of the sixth.  Alberto scored for the third time in the game in the bottom of the sixth to extend the Western lead to 8-3, but Manhattanville answered in the top of the seventh when freshman Nick Euvino (Elmsford, NY) led off with a single, stole second and third, and then scored on a wild pitch by Colonial reliever Derik Brady (New Milford, CT).

Western put its final two runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh on a walk, three straight singles, and Bierfeldt’s second sacrifice to deep center of the game.

Freshman Zack Taylor (Bethel, CT) relieved Brady in the eighth and closed out the game with the help of a game-ending double play after Manhattanville had produced back to back one-out singles in the top of the ninth.  Western’s final margin of victory was 10-4.

With the win, Western improves to 16-20 on the season, while Manhattanville College falls to 15-20.  The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, May 2, when they host Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham for a single game beginning at 4:00pm.
