WESTCONN FALLS TO BREWERS ON LATE
GOAL MILTON, NY (October 10, 2007) -- Vassar freshman Jessica Lance (Enfield, CT/Enfield) broke a scoreless game with five minutes to play, leading the Brewers to a 1-0 victory over Western Connecticut in a non-conference women’s field hockey game played at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome in Milton, NY. The loss breaks a six-game losing streak for the Brewers. With the victory, Vassar improves to 3-9 on the season, while Western Connecticut drops to 4-8. Vassar next resumes Liberty League play on Friday, October 19 with a road game against William Smith. The Colonials next face Bridgewater State at home this Saturday, October 14. The winning goal was orchestrated by sophomore Jordan Friedmann (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) who eluded three defenders en route to passing the ball to Lance. The freshman adeptly slid the ball past Sandra Vermeulen (Riverdale, NJ/Pompton Lakes), who replaced starting goalie freshman Christina Natale (Farmington, CT/Farmington) in the second half. Vermeulen made four second half saves for Western Connecticut. Vassar had a golden scoring opportunity to get on the board first, four minutes into the second half when senior Chrissy Lewis (Leesburg, VA/Lawrenceville School) rifled a shot that was masterfully stopped by Vermeulen. The ball rebounded off her pads and into the stick of Vassar’s Emily Fare who fired another shot that was again saved. The game remained scoreless until Lance notched the winning goal. Vassar controlled both halves, particularly the first, playing most of it in the Western Connecticut half of the field. The Brewers banged out 10 shots against Natale and 17 for the game. Natale was equal to the task, making seven saves in the first half before being replaced by Vermeulen. The Colonials managed only one shot for the game, coming in the first half against Vassar freshman goalie Rachel Horwitz (Beverly Hills/Harvard-Westlake), a replacement for starting goalie Ellie Pomerantz (Hartsdale, NY/The Hackley School). For the game, Vassar had 12 penalty corners. Western Connecticut had none.

WESTERN
CONNECTICUT UPSETS EASTERN CONNECTICUT IN OVERTIME MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Western Connecticut State University field hockey team scored off a penalty corner with 13 minutes left in regulation and Little East Conference scoring leader Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ) won it with a breakaway goal three minutes into overtime as the Colonials trimmed Eastern Connecticut State University, 3-2, Wednesday afternoon. The win is the first for Western (3-5, 2-2 little east) after losses to Eastern (2-7, 1-3 little east) each of the past two seasons, including last year’s 2-1 overtime setback. In snapping a four-game losing streak, Western hands Eastern its fourth loss in a row. Freshman forward Ashley Del Vecchio (Fairfield) and senior forward Stephanie Mongelli (Pequannock, NJ) each scored inside the final two minutes of the first half and Eastern’s 2-1 lead stood up until first-year Western sophomore Meredith Stuart (Washington) banged in a goal off Sara LeFevre’s (Goshen) penalty kick to tie the match with 13 minutes left in regulation. In the 6-on-6 overtime session, Romyns was foiled on two scoring bids in the opening 90 seconds before she ended the match with her conference-leading ninth goal of the season. Romyns gained possession on Eastern’s side of midfield, hustled down the left wing, and beat Eastern sophomore goalie Mindy Maher (Sherman) on a one-on-one situation with just 3:18 gone in sudden death. Romyns had given Western an early 1-0 lead in the 18th minute, scoring the first of her two breakaway goals. She took a pass from Stuart ahead of the field and when Eastern sophomore goalie Tia Mucciarone (Franklin, MA) came out to challenge the play, quickly unloaded a low shot inside the right post. Stuart is a first-year transfer from the University of New Hampshire. Returning to action after missing three games with injury, Del Vecchio beat Western freshman goalie Christina Natale (Farmington) with a rebound goal following a shot by Mongelli to tie the match with 1:41 left in the first half. Less than two minutes later, she found Mongelli with a short pass during a scramble in front of the net to tie the match with no time left in the first half. The goal for Mongelli, who has seen limited action the last two matches due to a pulled muscle, was her team-leading third of the year and the 20th of her career and pulls her into a three-way tie for second all-time, nine behind all-time leader Mo Deegan. Eastern hosts Plymouth State University Saturday at 1 p.m. in a conference match.

Under the stewardship of the 2006 Little East Conference Coach of the Year Nicole Castonguay, UMass Dartmouth is riding the momentum of the program’s most successful season, establishing a record 17 victories and an appearance in the championship round of the conference tournament. The Corsairs return a pair of Little East All-Conference selections, including first-team forward senior Caitlin DiCecca (Chelmsford, Mass.).
