Fitchburg State Blanks Western Connecticut, 2-0

FITCHBURG, MA (Sep. 12) — Freshman Abbie Brown (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) collected five saves in net as Fitchburg State blanked Western Connecticut State University, 2-0 in Little East Conference action this afternoon.
Fitchburg State received veteran efforts from its freshman class as a trio of newcomers played significant roles in the Falcons first conference victory of the season. With the win, Brown earns her first collegiate shutout, while classmates Hillary O’Kelly (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) and Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) both connected for their first collegiate goals.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead midway through the first half as O’Kelly scooped a Vanessa Truax (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) rebound and found the back of the net for her first tally of the season.
In the second half, Fitchburg State doubled its lead, grabbing a two goal advantage on Kelley’s first marker of the year. Junior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) carried the ball into the circle and dished to Kelley, setting the freshman up for an easy score in the right channel.
Fitchburg State kept the Western Connecticut offense at bay throughout the contest, limiting the Colonials to only two, first-half shots. The Falcons enjoyed an 11-8 advantage in shots, while creating opportunities with its five penalty corners. Freshman goalkeeper Heather Stone (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla) registered four saves in net for the Colonials, while Brown went the distance for the Falcons.
Fitchburg State (3-1, 1-0 LEC) will be back in action again next Saturday as it travels to Worcester State College at 2:30 p.m. Western Connecticut (1-4, 0-1 LEC) will travel to Ramapo College on Thursday at 4 p.m.
