Five different Colonials score in 5-1 win over arch-rival Eastern Connecticut
MANSFIELD, CT (Sep. 30) — The WestConn field hockey team, behind goals from five different players, defeated arch-rival Eastern Connecticut State University, 5-1 at the Mansfield Complex on Wednesday night.
It did not take long for the Colonials, now 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the Little East Conference, to get on the scoreboard. Freshman Valerie Lupo (New Fairfield, CT) netted her third goal of the season off a long feed from Stephanie Szafran (Killingworth, CT) at the 6:10 mark.
Szafran added her second goal of the season 1:24 into the second half and WestConn never looked back. Szafran was set up on the left side by a pass from freshman Nicole Andreasen.
The Warriors, 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the league, drew within a goal in the 43rd minute when Melanie Proud tallied her second goal of the season.
Melissa Berardi (Brookfield, CT) (on a penalty stroke), Elizabeth Vitale (West Milford, NJ) and Lindsay Gorman (Killingworth, CT) added unassisted goals for the winners during a 17 minutes span in the second half.
Heather Stone (Valhalla, NY) did not have to make a save in the goal for the Colonials as Eastern Connecticut was able to manage just two shot on the night.
Danielle Reichardt made nine saves for the Warriors before yielding way to Tia Mucciarone for the final 18 minutes. Mucciarone made two saves in the loss.
The Colonials travel to Keene State College this Saturday, October 3 for anothe key LEC match up. Face off with the Owls is slated for 1:30 pm.
