WestConn falls to LEC rival UMass Dartmouth, 3-1
DANBURY, CT (Oct. 9) — Sophomore Melissa Berardi (Brookfield, CT) got the Western Connecticut State University Field Hockey team on the board first, but the Colonials still fell 3-1 to Little East Conference rival UMass Dartmouth Friday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
At the 12:25 mark of the first half, Melissa Berardi lifted WestConn to an early 1-0 lead when she banged home a shot after an attempt by freshman Valerie Lupo (New Fairfield, CT) rebounded off the UMass Dartmouth goalie. UMass Dartmouth answered less than 10 minutes later on a goal by Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, MA) that was assisted by Linee Mello-Frost (New Bedford, MA). With 2:00 remaining in the first half, UMass Dartmouth’s Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, MA) took a pass from Kate Dorrance (Rehoboth, MA) and beat WestConn goalkeeper Heather Stone (Valhalla, NY) to give the Corsairs a 2-1 lead at intermission.
In the second half of play, UMass Dartmouth kept the Colonials pinned primarily in the defensive end, outshooting WestConn 7-2 for the half. At the 51:44 mark, Eleanor Taylor scored her second goal of the game, with an assist to Stephanie Kinchla, to give UMass Dartmouth a little breathing room and a 3-1 final margin of victory.
For the game, UMass Dartmouth outshot the Colonials 13-5 and held a 9-4 advantage in corners. Seana Golden (Somerset, MA) was only called upon to make one save in goal for the Corsairs to earn the victory, while freshman Heather Stone (Valhalla, NY) made six saves in a losing effort for the Colonials. With the loss, WestConn falls to 3-10 on the season and 1-6 in the Little East Conference. UMass Dartmouth now stands at 8-4, and remains tied for first place in the LEC at 6-1. WestConn returns to action Saturday, October 17, when it hosts Little East Conference rival Bridgewater State at the Westside Athletic Complex. Game time is slated for 5:00pm.
