WestConn's comeback bid falls short and Bridgewater State holds on for 2-1 victory on Senior Night
Shelby Farland nets both goals for the Bears
DANBURY, CT (Oct. 17)— Senior Meredith Stuart (Washington, CT) scored five minutes into the second half to cut WestConn's deficit in half, but the Bridgewater State College field hockey team was able to hold on for a 2-1 victory at The WAC on Saturday night.
Stuart, who prior to the start of the game, along with Kara Cullinane (Lindenhurst, NY), was honored, as WestConn's only two seniors, netted her third goal of the season off a feed from Stephanie Szafran (Killingworth, CT). Szafran's set up came off a penalty corner in the 41st minute of play.
Bridgewater State raced out to a 1-0 lead when Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, MA) deposited her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Nicole Henrique (Swansea, MA) 2:20 into the game.
Farland gave the Bears, now 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the Little East Conference, a 2-0 lead when she and Bethany Bush (Littleton, MA) sprinted 30 yards untouched for a break-away goal with only 4:35 elapsed on the game clock.
Following a time out, WestConn's defense clamped down the rest of the way and did not allow Bridgewater State another quality scoring chance.
Freshman goalie Heather Stone (Valhalla, NY) had an outstanding night in the cage for the Colonials. She had four saves against the Bears.
Katie Weber (Arlington, MA) made seven saves for Bridgewater State as WestConn out-shot the visitors 12-7.
The Colonials, 3-11 overall and 1-7 in the LEC, host Worcester State College at The WAC this Wednesday, October 21.
