Jensenís threes spark Westernís 91-87 win over UMass Dartmouth

DANBURY, CT (Jan. 7) — Junior guard Michael Jensen (Gales Ferry, CT) score 22 points and connected on 6 of 9 from behind the 3-pointer line to help spark the Western Connecticut State University men’s basketball team to a 91-87 win over Little East Conference rival UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.

Also scoring in double figures for Western were senior DaQuan Brooks (Atlanta, GA) who also scored 22 points, and senior Gary Robinson (Torrington, CT) who added 16.  Brooks handed out a game-high nine assists for the Colonials.

UMass Dartmouth used a balanced offensive attack that saw five different Corsairs hitting double figures.  John Genkos (Worcester, MA) led with 17 points, followed by Jordan Grace (Cambridge, MA) with 14 points, Eleazar Clayton (Boston, MA) and Lance Greene (Dorchester, MA) who each scored 13 points, and Alex Rodrigues (Fall River, MA) who finished with 10 points.  Clayton recorded a double-double by pulling down 11 rebounds on the day.

UMass Dartmouth scored the game’s first four points before Jensen hit a 3-pointer to spark a 13-3 run by Western.  The Colonials continued to lead by six at the midway point of the first half, but two minutes later, John Genkos (Worcester, MA) hit a three to even the score at 22-all.  A three by Robinson two minutes later pushed the Western lead back to five points, but the Corsairs closed the gap down the stretch for a 39-38 Western advantage going into the locker room at intermission.

Jensen got things started in the second half by hitting a three on Western’s first possession, and followed that 20 seconds later with another 3-pionter.  Another Jensen three gave the Colonials a five-point 53-48 lead, and Western still led by six when Jensen left the game after being fouled on a layup at the 12:45 mark.  After freshman Luis Bridtter (Stamford, CT) hit the free throw for the injured Jensen, UMass Dartmouth went on a 7-0 run to even the score at 58-58.  A Grace 3-pointer gave the Corsairs their largest lead of the game, 65-61, but Western quickly regained the lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Brooks.  Two free throws by Robinson with 1:30 remaining pushed the Western lead to eight points, 84-76, and even a pair of Corsair threes in the final minute couldn’t close the gap as Western held on for a 91-87 victory.

For the game, UMass Dartmouth held a 45-38 advantage in rebounds, as well as a slight 25-23 edge in assists.  The Corsairs also outshot the Colonials from the floor, 47.1% compared to 44.8%, but Western connected on 83.3% of its free throws while UMass Dartmouth only managed 56%.

With the win, Western improves to 12-1 on the season and remains unbeaten at 3-0 in the Little East Conference.  UMass Dartmouth falls to 7-6, 1-2 in the LEC.  The Colonials return to action on Tuesday, January 10th, when they travel to play Little East Conference rival Keene State.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm.
