BOX SCORE

WESTON, MA (Nov. 18) — Western Connecticut State University guard DaQuan Brooks (Atlanta, Ga.) scored 27 points to propel the Colonials past Medgar Evers College, 85-72, in the second game of the Regis College Pride Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night in Weston, Mass. The Colonials pick up their first win of 2011 to move to 1-0 while the Cougars drop to 1-1 on the young season.

West Conn. will take on host Regis College in the Championship Game on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. while Medgar Evers takes on Maine Maritime Academy in the Consolation Game at 1:00 p.m.

Both teams traded leads at the beginning of the game before the Colonials used an 11-1 run - capped off by a three pointer from Ryan Pelletier (Wolcott, Conn.) - to open up a 23-11 lead with 9:08 remaining in the opening frame. The Cougars chipped away at the lead and trailed by only six when a Jovan Deare (Brooklyn, N.Y.) layup made it a 27-23 game with 4:27 showing on the clock. A James Gilmore (Brooklyn, N.Y.) basket made it a 29-27 game before West Conn. used another big run to end the half, outscoring the Cougars 14-5 over the final three-plus minutes.

In the closing seconds of the first half, DaQuan Brooks took the inbounds pass and weaved his way to half court before heaving the ball on target and burying the 50-footer to give the Colonials a 43-32 lead headed into the break.

Bowers led all scorers at the half with 16 points while his teammate Gary Robinson (Torrington, Conn.) chipped in with five points and eight rebounds. Medgar Evers was paced by 11 points and three rebounds from Jovan Deare while James Gilmore added seven points of his own in the period.

The start of the second half was all Cougars as they opened the frame on 12-0 run, including a monstrous alley-oop dunk from Winston Douglas (Hempstead, N.Y.), to overtake the Colonials 44-43 with 16:36 left to play in the game. The Cougars took their biggest lead of the game at 52-45 as Tony Sims (Wesbury, N.Y.) buried a jumper but West Conn. made the lead disappear in a matter of minutes, using a quick basket by Mark Redding (Waterbury, Conn.) followed by a corner three-pointer from Pelletier and a layup by Brooks that left the score tied at 52-all.

The teams traded leads again over the next four minutes before a pair of freethrows by Michael Kennedy (Newtown, Conn.) gave the Colonials a lead they would never relinquish. Gary Robinson scored eight points in a row, including a pair of triples, to extend the WCSU lead to 69-62 and never looked back as Medgar Evers would get no closer than five points as the Colonials kept the Cougars at bay and held on for a 85-72 win.

Western Connecticut won the battle of the boards, 46-42, while also committing one fewer turnover (23-24). The Colonials’ bench was the difference in the game, however, as WCSU’s reserves outscored the Cougars’ bench at a 25-9 clip.

For West Conn., DaQuan Brooks led all scorers with 27 points and also added a game-high four assists. Gary Robinson posted a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Ter’Qwan Perkins (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Michael Jensen (Gales Ferry, Conn.) helped lead the effort off the bench as they added eight and nine points each, respectively.

The Cougars had four players enter double-digits in scoring led by Jovan Deare’s 22 points. Jarrel Deare (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Tony Sims scored 11 points each, while Douglas Winston had 10 points and a team-leading seven rebounds in the setback.
