CARPENTER, LAVERTY LEAD EASTERN MEN'S LACROSSE IN LEC
Warriors advance to conference tournament final with 21-11 win over Western
from the desk of Bob Molta - ECSU SID

WILLIMANTIC – With five goals and eight assists, senior attackman Dave Carpenter (Redding, CT) broke Eastern Connecticut State University  records for points in a career and  in a game as well as his own record for assists in a season and senior attackman Tommy Laverty (Westport, CT) tied the match record for goals with eight as the second-seeded Warriors moved into the championship match of the 2007 Little East Conference men’s lacrosse playoffs with a 21-11 victory over third-seeded Western Connecticut State University Thursday afternoon at Thomas Nevers Field.

Defending playoff champion Eastern (8-8) faces regular-season champion and top-seeded Keene State College Saturday at 1 p.m. in the title match at Keene, NH. The Owls won their 14th game without a loss this year with a 15-3 win over fourth-seeded Massachusetts Boston today at Keene, NH. Keene defeated Eastern, 12-5, during the regular-season meeting three weeks ago.

Carpenter (five) and Laverty (eight) combined for 13 goals and Carpenter added eight assists  to power the Warriors to their highest goal total of the season. Eastern had beaten Western (10-7) by a goal, 15-14, during the regular-season match played in a downpour April 4 at Danbury.

Needing eight points to become the program’s all-time leading scorer and four assists to break his own season mark for assists, Carpenter finished with a program-record 13 points on five goals and eight assists. He broke Brian Hebron’s career point record of 255 with his eighth point of the match, an assist on senior midfielder Kyle MacDonald’s (Hamden, CT) third-quarter goal which gave the Warriors a 14-5 lead with 7:33 left in the frame. He already owns the career assist record and now has 261 career points on 99 goals and 162 assists

Carpenter’s fourth assist of the match on a goal by Laverty with nine seconds left in the first quarter  broke his season record of 52 points which he had set last year. He has 57 assists this season.  Carpenter had shared the previous match record of 11 points with Hebron.

Laverty, whose previous match high for goals had been three, scored six of Eastern’s first seven goals against Western as the Warriors built a 7-1 lead after one quarter. Laverty’s eight goals ties the game record for goals set by Eddie Sheehan against Trinity eight years ago.

KEENE STATE CRUISES PAST WESTCONN, 16-3
from the desk of Stuart Kaufman - KSC SID

KEENE, N.H. 4/14/07 – Keene State College defeated Western Connecticut State University 16-3 in a physically played Little East Conference men’s lacrosse game at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.

Ranked 23rd in the latest USILA poll and fifth in New England, Keene State (10-0, 4-0 LEC) continued its undefeated season. Western Conn. drops to 7-5 (1-3 LEC).

Sean Panora (South Windsor, Conn.) scored four goals for the Owls who jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. Two unanswered second quarter goals by Panora and Mike Fontaine (Wolfeboro, N.H.), who netted three goals in the game, extended KSC’s halftime advantage to 7-1. Panora has a team-leading 24 goals this season.

“It was a physical game, but I thought we responded well,” said KSC Coach Mark Theriault. “Western Conn. is one of those up-and-coming teams in the conference and they played hard.”

Theriault said the difference was the play of his team’s defense. “They’re doing just a fantastic job,” Theriault said about Owls’ defense which is second in the country (Division III) in goals (42) allowed. “It’s easy to get some momentum going when they keep stopping the other team.”

In addition to his strong defensive play, long-pole midfielder Easton Keezer also chipped in with a pair of goals. “I just took advantage of the open lane and tried to make a big play,” he said.

Tony Santa Fe (Derry, N.H.,) and Taylor Morasutti (Cheshire, Conn.) added two goals each. Santa Fe also had three assists.
Adam Lanehart (Redding, Conn.) scored a pair of goals for the Colonials.

Keene State goalie Matt Johnson (Derry, N.H.) and WCSU goalie Kyle Wood (Hyde Park, N.Y.) both finished the game with 14 saves.

Keene State has a week off to prepare for next Saturday’s key LEC game at home against Eastern Conn. Western Conn. hosts UMass Boston on Saturday.

Stashenko got one back for the Colonials to make it a 6-2 game at the half.
WestConn tallied three unanswered goals in the third period to cut the margin to one goal (6-5), but Russell, a Panther long-stick middle, rifled one in with 28 seconds left in the third quarter to stop the Western momentum and make it a 7-5 game entering the fourth.
