Barbieri Scores Three as WestConn Wins Home Opener Over Mount Ida, 9-8

DANBURY, CT - (Mar. 5) – Sophomore Andrew Barbieri (Islip Terrace, NY) scored three goals to lead Western Connecticut State University to a 9-8 victory over Mount Ida College in the 2008 season opener for both teams at the WestConn Athletic Complex Wednesday evening. Sophomore Adam Lanehart (Redding, CT) also contributed three points for the Colonials with two goals and one assist.
Also scoring for WestConn were junior Vincent Bevilacqua (Branford, CT), sophomore John McGrath (Wantagh, NY), senior Dennis Skarda (Danbury, CT), and junior George Tsirigotis (Islip Terrace, NY), each scoring one goal.
Leading the attack for Mount Ida were Brett Conley (Fairfield, CT) with four goals and John Lightbown (Melrose, MA) with three.
Mount Ida scored the only goal of the first period on a pass from Dan Harrington (Westford, MA) to Conley, but WestConn scored the first two goals of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Lightbown scored an unassisted goal to pull the Mustangs even at 2-2, and WestConn quickly replied with goals from Barbieri and Lanehart to reclaim the lead at 4-2, but a goal late in the second by Conley kept Mount Ida close. The third period featured four unassisted goals, but neither team was able to gain an advantage and the period ended with the score deadlocked at 7-7. Skarda scored early in the fourth to put the Colonials back up by one, but one minute later Mount Ida answered with a goal for the game’s fifth tie. The game winner came when Tsirigotis put the Colonials back on top with ten minutes remaining in the game, and although both teams had strong scoring opportunities down the stretch WestConn held on to win, 9-8.
Junior Kyle Wood (Hyde Park, NY) earned the victory in goal for WestConn after making 15 saves. Matt Vernik (Bethany, CT) made 14 saves in goal in a losing effort for the Mustangs.
WestConn’s record now stands at 1-0 on the season, while Mount Ida falls to 0-1.
The next game for WestConn will be on Saturday afternoon, March 8th, when they host Castleton State at the WestConn Athletic Complex. Game time is slated for 2:30pm
