Plattsburgh State Scores Twice In Final Minute To Defeat WestConn, 14-13

DANBURY, CT (Mar. 16) – Plattsburgh State’s Bryan Copius (Seaford, NY) and Luke Weidlein (Seaford, NY) each scored in the final minute of play for a come-from-behind 14-13 win over Western Connecticut State University Sunday afternoon at the WestConn Athletic Complex. The Colonials, who trailed 5-1 midway through the second period, fought back in the third and fourth periods and took the lead on a spectacular unassisted goal by senior Dennis Skarda (Danbury, CT) with 44 seconds remaining on the clock. Plattsburgh State’s Ryan Price (Lindenhurst, NY) then won two consecutive face-offs setting up the game-winning heroics for the Cardinals.

Sophomore Adam Lanehart (Redding, CT) led WestConn with four goals. Also scoring for the Colonials were sophomore Andrew Barbieri (Islip Terrace, NY) with three goals, senior Ron Pac (Glastonbury, CT) with two goals, and junior Joseph Aitken (Lakville, CT), freshman Tom Begley (East Islip, NY), senior Dennis Skarda (Danbury, CT), and junior George Tsirigotis (Islip Terrace, NY) who each scored once. Skarda led the Colonials in assists with two.

Leading the attack for Plattsburgh State were Luke Weidlein with three goals, and Bryan Copius, Matt Maes (Lindenhurst, NY), Pat Nastro (Huntington, NY), Frank Sangiovanni (Huntington Station, NY), and Jimmy Tenny (Brewster, NY) who each scored twice.

Plattsburgh State controlled the action early taking a 5-1 lead midway through the second period, but WestConn’s Barbieri scored twice in the final two minutes of the half to bring the Colonials with one, 6-5, at intermission. The Colonials struck first early in the second half on a man-up goal by Lanehart, and for the remainder of the game the margin was never greater than one for either team. The fourth period, which began deadlocked at 10, featured three ties and three lead changes before the Cardinals took the dramatic victory by the final score of 14-13.

Billy Hughes (East Patchogue, NY) earned his third victory of the season in goal for the Cardinals after making 31 saves. Junior Kyle Wood (Hyde Park, NY) made 23 saves in goal in a losing effort for the Colonials

WestConn’s record now stands at 3-2 on the season, while Plattsburgh State climbs to 3-1.

WestConn travels to Maritime College on Tuesday, March 18. Game time is slated for 7:00pm.
