WestConn Cruises Past Southern Maine, 14-4

DANBURY, CT (Apr. 6) – Western Connecticut State University scored eight unanswered goals in the first and second periods and never looked back in beating the University of Southern Maine, 14-4, Sunday afternoon at the WestConn Athletic Complex.
Senior Dennis Skarda (Danbury, CT), sophomore Andrew Barbieri (Islip Terrace, NY), and senior Ron Pac (Glastonbury, CT) each contributed three goals in the Colonials’ victory. Also scoring for WestConn were sophomore Adam Lanehart (Redding, CT) with two goals, and junior Vincent Bevilacqua (Branford, CT), freshman Mike Barnao ( Sayville, NY), and sophomore Kirk Zachary (East Islip, NY) who each scored once. Adam Lanehart led the Colonials with three assists.
Leading the attack for Southern Maine were Josh Reinhold (Tampa, FL) with two goals, and Preston Gilbert (Saco, ME) and Matt Soule (Denmark, ME) who each scored one goal in a losing effort for the Huskies.
Southern Maine scored the game’s first goal on an unassisted shot by Josh Reinhold at the 11:23 mark of the first period, but the Huskies were then held scoreless for the remainder of the first half. WestConn’s first goal was scored by Andrew Barbieri, assisted by junior Terry Stroz (Monroe, CT), less than one minute later. The Colonials would score four more goals in the first and shutout the Huskies by the score of 3-0 in the second to take an 8-1 lead at intermission. WestConn scored on the first possession of the second half on a beautiful pass from Dennis Skarda to Ron Pac and closed out the period with a commanding 12-3 lead. The game’s final goal was scored at the 8:07 mark of the fourth period when Adam Lanehart took a pass from Mike Barnao and found the back of the net to make the final score 14-4.
Chris Frappier earns his first win of the season after making 5 saves in goal for WestConn, while James Suriyodom (Deer Park, NY) takes the loss for Southern Maine.
With this afternoon’s victory, WestConn’s record now stands at 6-4 on the season (2-1 in the LEC), while Southern Maine falls to 2-5 (0-2 LEC).
WestConn hosts Mitchell College at the WestConn Athletic Complex on Wednesday, April 9th. Game time is slated for 4:00pm.
